Activity 1: Reflective Journal

Objective:

Reflect on the alignment between your personal values and those of social work to
develop self-awareness.

Procedure:

1. Introduction:

Begin by reading a short passage on the core values of social work.

These values often include dignity, justice, service, integrity, competence, and
the importance of human relationships. Reflect on how these values guide social
workers in their daily work and decision-making.

2. Self-Reflection:

Take a few moments to reflect on whether you envision a future in social

work. Write down your thoughts, any interests, or past experiences that relate to
this profession. Consider why you might be drawn to the field or if you have seen
social workers positively impact your community.

3. Identify Core Values:

Review a list of core values in social work, such as:

o Dignity and Worth of the Person

o Social Justice
o Importance of Human Relationships
o Integrity
o Competence
o Service

Circle or highlight the values that resonate with you the most. Think about
specific situations where you have acted in alignment with these values, whether in
personal, academic, or volunteer experiences.

4. Writing:

Write a journal entry discussing the core values you identified. Explore
how they connect with your personal experiences. For example, have you ever
advocated for justice or helped others in need? Why do these values matter to
you personally, and how do they shape your worldview? Also, reflect on how you
might apply these values in your everyday life, particularly in the context of your
work, relationships, or community involvement.

5. Reflection:

Conclude by writing a few sentences about what you learned about

yourself through this activity. Do you feel that your personal values align with
those of social work? How might this impact your future career choices or
personal growth?

Activity 2: Case Study Analysis

Objective:
To understand the role of social workers in real-life scenarios and learn intervention
strategies.

Case Study Topics: (Choose only 1)

1. Poverty and Economic Hardship:

Many of the youth live in low-income neighborhoods, with limited access to basic
necessities and opportunities for upward mobility.
2. Substance Abuse and Mental Health:
Some of the youth are involved in drug use, either as a coping mechanism for
trauma or peer pressure, and may also be struggling with mental health issues
like depression or anxiety.
3. Educational Barriers:
Many of the youth are disengaged from school, either due to academic struggles,
behavioral issues, or a lack of support at home.
4. Peer Influence and Gang Involvement:
The youth are often influenced by peer pressure and are at risk of becoming
involved in criminal activities or gang life, which offers a sense of belonging and
financial gain.

Procedure:

1. Preparation)
Read or watch a brief case study that illustrates a social worker’s involvement in
a real-world situation. For example, the case could involve a social worker
assisting survivors after a natural disaster or working with a vulnerable group like
at-risk youth, elderly individuals, or refugees.

Note the main issue(s) presented in the case study. Consider the immediate
needs of the client(s), any challenges faced by the social worker, and the context
of the intervention.

2. Identify the Social Worker’s Role

After reviewing the case study, identify the roles the social worker plays. Social
workers may assume various roles.

Write down each role and briefly describe how it relates to the case. For example,
a social worker might act as an advocate for a child in the foster care system or
as a counselor for a trauma survivor.

3. Analyze Intervention Strategies (10 minutes):

List the intervention strategies the social worker uses to assist the clients in the
case study. These could include:
o Connecting clients with resources: This could involve helping clients
access housing, food, or medical services after a disaster or crisis.
o Counseling: Offering mental health support and coping strategies to
individuals facing trauma, grief, or emotional distress.
o Crisis intervention: Providing immediate support during an emergency,
such as a natural disaster or family conflict.
o Advocacy: Speaking on behalf of the client to ensure they receive
necessary services or legal protection.

For each strategy, note its purpose and how it addresses the client’s needs. For
example, connecting clients to housing after a disaster addresses their
immediate need for shelter.

4. Evaluate the Effectiveness of Interventions (10 minutes):

Reflect on the outcomes of the social worker’s actions in the case study.
Consider the following questions:
o Were the interventions successful in meeting the client’s needs?
o Did the social worker’s actions lead to positive changes or improvements
in the client’s situation?
o Were there any missed opportunities for further intervention or support?

Consider how the social worker might improve their approach. Could they have
used different intervention strategies? What other resources or support might
have been beneficial for the client?

5. Discussion or Summary
If done in a group, share your findings with peers and compare perspectives on
the social worker’s role and strategies used. Discuss whether different
approaches might have been more effective or if other interventions should have
been considered.

Individually, summarize what you learned about effective social work intervention.
What strategies do you think would be most important for a social worker in a
similar scenario? How do the social worker’s roles impact client outcomes and
overall success?

Outcome:
By completing this activity, you will develop a deeper understanding of practical social
work strategies and how they can be applied to real-life scenarios. You will also gain
insight into the diverse roles social workers play in supporting clients and the impact of
their interventions on client outcomes.
