Pressure

Pressure (p) is defined as the perpendicular force (F) acting on unit area of a surface or the force per unit
𝑭
area (A). 𝑷= where P= pressure, F = force, A = area.
𝑨
SI unit of pressure is the pascal. (Pa or N m-2) It is a scalar quantity.

Pressure due to liquid: (Hydrostatic

Pressure)
Liquids and gases are called fluids, as they can change
their shapes easily. A fluid is a substance that can flow.
Pressure due to a fluid column = height of column X
density of the fluid X gravitational field strength.
p=hρg
Properties
• Pressure is transmitted throughout the liquid
• Pressure acts in all directions
• All points at the same depth in a fluid are at the
. same pressure
• Pressure increases with depth
• Pressure is dependent not on the shape of the . . container but on its depth.

Atmospheric pressure: Pressure exerted by the air molecules at sea level is known as atmospheric pressure.
Its value is 1.013 x 105 Pa.
Hydraulic systems:

One simple application is shown in the diagram above, the lifting of a car. If there is a relatively small force
Fs pushing down on piston As the pressure on the fluid is
𝑭𝒔
𝑷𝒔 =
𝑨𝒔
The pressure is transmitted via the incompressible fluid to the other piston Al, so the pressure at side Al is
𝑷𝒍 = 𝑭𝑨𝒍
𝒍
And we know that pressure in both side is same, so
𝑃𝑠= 𝑃𝑙

𝐹𝑠 𝐹𝑙
So: =
𝐴𝑠 𝐴𝑙

Barometer: An instrument for measuring atmospheric pressure is known as Barometer.

The height of mercury does not depend on the thickness of the tube and the
amount of the liquid.

Manometer:
A manometer is a simple instrument for measuring gas pressures, usually by the difference in height
of two liquid columns.

• The simplest of such instrument is a U-tube containing some liquid, usually mercury,
water or oil.
When the manometer is not connected to any gas supply, the liquid levels in the left and
right side are equal since atmospheric pressure acts on both surfaces of the liquid.
