Britain : a new Eldorado ?


Before watching the video:

1) Use your knowledge to find the right definition for the following words.
an Eldorado  ⃝  ⃝ information only giving one part of an argument, with the
intention of influencing people's opinions.

2) Identify the nature, the source of the video and the audience.
What does the title reveal about the point of view ?
It is an extract from a documentary film.
It is a newsreel, a documentary film containing news stories, produced by
Pathé News. It is aimed at British people and it was shown in movie theaters
before films.
It deals with Jamaican immigration to Britain. It will be about the difficulties they
had to face on arriving in Britain.
Watch the beginning of the video (0’46’’) and check your hypothesis:

3) Collect information about the arrival of West Indians in the UK (dates and
figures)
In 1954, about 10,000 West Indians came to Britain.
In 1955, it is believed that another 15,000 will make the journey to
Britain.
4) Explain the 1954 “national controversy” using information from the video.
British people are worried about the arrival of large numbers of West Indians in
the UK.
There are different opinions and ideas on this subject.
Not everyone approves of the arrival of West Indians settling in Britain.
Whatever the feelings of British people, they cannot deny them entry because
British citizens are entitled to the identical rights of any member of the Empire.

the UK.

6) What vision of immigration is shown in this video?


Immigration is shown as an opportunity to have a better life for the migrants.
7) What are British people worried about?
They are worried that West Indian workers take their jobs.
Immigration does not cause unemployment amongst white workers.
8) What is the aim of this video?
The aim of this video is to show British people they have no reason to worry
about immigration.
The journalist wants to reassure British people and convince them to accept
West Indian workers.
9) Why is it a form of propaganda?
It is a form of propaganda because it only shows the negative aspects of the
West Indies and the positive aspects of Britain.
The West Indies are represented as a poor, backward and underdeveloped
country. In contrast, Britain appears as an Eldorado. It is a richer, more modern
and more developed country.
