Rationale

It is crucial to delve into multifaceted dynamics influencing students’ lives.

Parttime employment can offer financial support, but it also introduces a delicate

balance between work and academics. This study aims to analyze the data on

students work hour, income levels, and their corresponding impact on academic

outcomes. According to Muluk., (2017) students are considered as a potential labor

force because they have both good health, knowledge, and manual labor, so they can

work in any suitable occupation to earn extra income. Understanding these

correlations can provide valuable insights for both educational institutions and

policymakers seeking to optimize support systems for students managing employment

alongside their studies.

Additionally, the regional context of Davao del Norte adds another layer of

significance to the investigation. Economic conditions, job opportunities, and the local

academic environment contribute to the unique challenges faced by students.

According to Darlena Cunha., (2018) there are several benefits of being a working

student, in terms of money, lessons of budgeting, in time management, and especially

for early working experience. Examining these factors will not only enrich our

understanding of the relationship between part-time employment and academic

performance but also offer context-specific recommendations to enhance the overall

student experience at Davao Del Norte State College.

By adopting a quantitative approach, this research aspires to contribute

empirical evidence to the ongoing discourse on student’s employment and academic

success. Through statistical analysis, patterns may emerge, shedding light on optimal

work-study balances and potential areas for intervention. Ultimately, the findings aim
to inform policies and practices that can foster a supportive environment for students,

enabling them to navigate the demands of part-time work while excelling in their

academic pursuits at Davao Del Norte State College.

Research Objectives

This study aims to analyze the data on students work hour, income levels,

and their corresponding impact on academic outcomes of Davao Del Norte State

College.

a.) To explore the impact of part time employment on the academic

performance of the students in Davao Del Norte State College.

b.) To look into the causes leads to part-time employment.

c.) To present implementable recommendations for study on part time

employment.

d.) To examine the challenges that students face as a result of merging part-

time work and their studies.

e.) To examine the implication of part time work on student’s academic

performance.

Theoretical Framework

This study aims to correlate the intricate relationship between these two facets of

student life within the unique context of Davao Del Norte State. Guided by Human

Capital Theory and Roles Strain Theory, this theoretical framework seeks to provide
nuanced understanding of how students’ decisions to engage in part-time employment

may shape their academic experiences.

At the core of our theoretical lens is Becker’s (1964) Human Capital Theory, which

posits that individuals view education and work as investments in their human capital.

As students invest time and effort in part-time employment, the returns on their human

capital may extend beyond monetary gains, potentially influencing their academic

performance.

Complementing the Human Capital Theory is the application of Role Strain Theory,

as articulated by Goode (1960). This theory acknowledges the challenges individual

face when juggling multiple roles within the same time frame. In the context of student

life the dual roles of academic engagement and part-time employment may introduce

strains that manifest in various forms, such as time constraints, psychological stress,

and conflicting responsibilities.

Through the synthesis of Human Capital Theor and Role Strain Theory, this study

seeks to unravel the intricate dynamics shaping the experiences of the students at

Davao Del Norte State College. By adopting theoretical framework grounded in these

perspectives, we aim to provide a foundation for empirical investigation into the

quantitative correlation between part-time employment and academic performance,

contributing valuable insights to both academic discourse and practical interventions

within the educational landscape.
