3.3 Finish B's sentences. Use always ~ing.
1. A: I'm afraid I've lost my pen again.
B: Not again! You're always losing your pen.
2. A: The car has broken down تعطلتagain.
B: That car is useless! It is always breaking down.
3. A: Look! You've made the same mistake again.
B: Oh no, not again! I am always making the same mistake.

He never thinks about other people. He is very selfish. (not 'he is being') (= he is
selfish generally, not only at the moment)
It's hot today. (not 'it is being hot')
Sarah is very tired. (not 'is being tired')
- We normally use the present simple (not continuous) with these verbs:
D- see - hear - smell - taste
Do you see that man over there? (not 'are you seeing')
This room smells. Let's open a window.
- We often use can + see/hear/smell/taste:
I can hear a strange noise. Can you hear it?
- You can use the present simple or continuous when you say how somebody looks or
feels now:
You look well today. or You're looking well today.
How do you feel now? or How are you feeling now?
But
I usually feel tired in the morning. (not 'I'm usually feeling')

4.3 Put the verb into the correct form, present continuous or present simple.
1. Are you hungry? Do you want (you/want) something to eat?
2. Don't put the dictionary away. I’m using (use) it.
3. Don't put the dictionary away. I need (need) it.
4. Who is that man? What does he want (he/want)?
5. Who is that man? Why is he looking (he/look) at us?
6. Alan says he's 80 years old, but nobody believes (believe) him.
7. She told me her name but I don’t remember (not/remember) it now.

Note: We consider ( يعتبرnobody, nothing, everyone, etc.) as a singular noun, so you have
to put the third person singular(s) to the verb if it comes with one of them in the present

4.4 Complete the sentences using the most suitable form of be. Sometimes you must use
the simple (am/is/are) and sometimes the continuous is more suitable (am/is/are being).
1. I can't understand why he's being so selfish. He isn't usually like that.
2. Sarah is being very nice to me at the moment. I wonder why.
3. You'll like Debbie when you meet her. She is very nice.
4. Normally you are very sensible, so why are you being so unreasonable about waiting
ten more minutes?
5. Why isn't Steve at work today? Is he ill?
- So after ‘did’, we have verbs in their base form ( no ~s, no ~ed, no ~ing)
A: Did you go out last night?
B: Yes, I went to the cinema, but I didn't enjoy the film much.
'When did Mr. Thomas die?' 'About ten years ago.'
They didn't invite her to the party, so she didn't go.
'Did you have time to write the letter?' 'No, I didn't.'
- In the following examples, ‘do’ is the main verb in the sentence (did ... do / didn’t
do):
What did you do at the weekend? (not 'what did you at the weekend')
I didn't do anything. (not 'I didn't anything')

5. The bed was very uncomfortable. I did not sleep very well. (sleep)

7. The hotel wasn't very expensive. It did not cost very much. (cost)
8. I was in a hurry, so I did not have time to phone you. (have)
9. It was hard carrying the bags. They were very heavy. (be)
UNIT 6. Past continuous (I was doing)
A- Study this example situation:
Yesterday, Karen and Jim played tennis. They began at 10 o'clock
and finished at 11.30.
- So, at 10.30 they were playing tennis.
They were playing = 'they were in the middle of playing'. They had
not finished playing.
Was/were (verb)-ing is the past continuous.

B- I was doing something = I was in the middle of doing something at a certain time. The
action or situation had already started before this time, but had not finished:
This time last year, I was living in Brazil.
When Karen arrived, we had dinner. (= First Karen arrived and then we had
dinner.)
E- Some verbs (for example, know and want) are not normally used in the continuous:
We were good friends. We knew each other well. (not 'we were knowing')
I was enjoying the party but Chris wanted to go home. (not 'was wanting')
EXERCISES
6.1 What were you doing at these times? Write sentences as in the examples. The past
continuous is not always necessary:
1. (at 8 o'clock yesterday evening) I was having dinner.
2. (at 5 o'clock last Saturday) I was on a bus on my way to home.
3. (at 10.15 yesterday morning) I was studying.
4. (at 4.30 this morning) I was sleeping.
5. (at 7.45 yesterday evening) I was watching TV.

6.4 Put the verbs into the correct form, past continuous or past simple (IMPORTANT):
1. Jenny was waiting (wait) for me when I arrived (arrive).
2. 'What were you doing (you/do) at this time yesterday?' 'I was asleep.'
3. 'Did you go (you/go) out last night?' 'No, I was too tired.'
4. How fast were you driving (you/drive) when the accident happened (happen)?
5. Sam took (take) a photograph of me while I was not looking (not/look).
6. We were in a very difficult position موقع. We did not know (not/know) what to do.
7. I haven't seen Alan for ages. When I last saw (see) him, he was trying (try) to find a
job.
8. I was walking (walk) along عبرthe street when suddenly I heard (hear) footsteps
ُخ َطىbehind me. Somebody was following (follow) me. I was scared and I started َبدأت
(start) to run.
9. When I was young, I wanted (want) to be a pilot.
10. Last night I dropped ( أسقطdrop) a plate طبقwhen I was doing (do) the washing
up. Fortunately, لحسن الحظit did not break (not/break).

Present and Past
1- Put the verb into the correct form: present simple (I do). present continuous (I am
doing), past simple (I did), or past continuous (I was doing).
1. We can go out now. It is not raining (not / rain) any more.
2. Catherine was waiting (wait) for me when I arrived (arrive).
3. I am getting (get) hungry. Let's go and have something to eat.
4. What do you do (you / do) in your spare time? Do you have any hobbies?
5. The weather was horrible when we arrived (arrive). It was cold and it was raining (rain)
hard.
6. Louise usually phones (phone) me on Fridays, but she didn’t phone (not / phone) last
Friday.
7. A: When I last saw you, you were thinking (think) of moving to a new flat.
B: That's right, but, in the end, I decided (decide) to stay where I was.
8. Why are you looking (you / look) at me like that? What's the matter?
9. It's usually dry here at this time of the year. It does not rain (not / rain) much.
10. The phone rang (ring) three times while we were having (have) dinner last night.
11. Linda was busy when we went (go) to see her yesterday. She had an exam today and

Yesterday afternoon Sarah wemt (go) to the station to meet Paul. When she got (get)

early.
When I got home, Bill was lying (lie) on the sofa. The television was on, but he was not
watching (not / watch) it. He fell (fall) asleep and was snoring (snore) loudly. I turned
(turn) the television off and just then he woke (wake) up.
Last night I had just gone (just / go) to bed and was reading (read) a book when suddenly
I heard (hear) a noise. I got (get) up to see what it was, but I had not seen (not / see)

Lisa had to go to New York last week, but she almost missed (miss) the plane. She was
