Aim :- To determine the acceleration due to gravity (g) at a place using Katter’s pendulum.

Apparatus :- Katter’s pendulum, Knife edges, Meter scale, Stopwatch, Prism etc.

Formula :- Acceleration due to gravity at a place,

g=

Where,

g = Acceleration due to gravity at a place

T1= Periodic time about knife edge K1

T2 = Periodic time about knife edge K2

L1 = Distance of knife edge K1 from centre of gravity

L2 = Distance of knife edge K2 from centre of gravity

Diagram :-

Procedure :-

1) Close the knife edges K1 and K2 at the end point of the Katter’s pendulum.
2) Adjust the small metal weight in the needle of bar such that Katter’s pendulum balanced
horizontally, using a prism.
3) Measure the distance between centre of gravity and the knife edge
4) Suspend the Katter’s pendulum at the knife edge K1 and K2 as a L1 and L2 respectively.
5) Measure the time required for the 25 oscillations for 2 times.
6) Repeat the same procedure for the knife edge K2

Observations :-

1) Distance of knife edge K1 from centre of gravity (L1 ) = ____ cm

(Metal side weight)
2) Distance of knife edge K2 from centre of gravity (L2 ) = ____ cm
(Rubber side weight)
Observation Table :- For period of oscillation T1 and T2

Sr. Knife Time For 25 Oscillation (In Sec) Periodic Time

No. Edge (In Sec)
(1) (2) Mean (Avg)
1) K1

2) K2

Calculation :-

1) Acceleration due to gravity at a place,

g=

.
.
.

g = ______ m/s2

2) Percentage error in acceleration due to gravity,

% error = × 100%

.
.
.

% error = ____ %

Result :-

1) The acceleration due to gravity (g) at a place using Katter’s pendulum = ______ m/s2

2) Percentage error in acceleration due to gravity = ______ %

Precaution :-

1) Amplitude of oscillation should be small.

2) Support should be small and does not move as the pendulum vibrations.
