EXPERIMENT NO.

01

Aim :- To determine the acceleration due to gravity (g) using compound

pendulum.

Apparatus :- Compound pendulum, Knife edges, Meter scale, Stopwatch etc.

Formula :- Acceleration due to gravity,

4п2 𝐿
g=
𝑇2

Where,
g = Acceleration due to gravity
L = Length of the equivalent simple pendulum
T = Time period
Diagram
Procedure
1) Measure the length of all the holes from the one end of the bar pendulum and
note down.

2) Suspend the bar pendulum in the first hole and measure the time for the 25
oscillations and note down.

3) Repeat this procedure for all the holes excluding a central hole and note down
the corresponding time.

4) Repeat the procedure 3 times for same holes.

5) Plot a graph between distance of holes from one end and time period.

6) From the graph, calculate the length of the pendulum.

Result :-

1) The acceleration due to gravity (g) using compound pendulum = ______

2) Percentage error in acceleration due to gravity = ______

Precaution :-

1) Amplitude of oscillation should be small.

2) Bar pendulum should rest on knife edges and oscillation should be in a

vertical plane.
