RFH Physics Name:

Practice with Force

For each of the following scenarios, draw a force diagram.

1. There is a 39.2 N cat curled up in your lap, what is the mass of the cat?

2. An elevator is pulled by a cable with 400 N of force. If the elevator weighs 100 N, what is
the net force? Is the elevator moving with constant or changing velocity?

3. A basketball is dropped from the Leaning Tower of Pisa, it is pulled down by the earth
with 6 N. What is its mass?

4. A crate is pushed across a frictionless floor with a leftward force of 50 N, the floor
pushes up with a force of 15 N. What is the crate’s acceleration?

5. A hot air balloon pulls up on a basket dangled beneath it with 64 N, the basket is pulled
down by the earth with 67 N. Find the net force and the acceleration on the basket.
6. A hockey puck is pushed across the ice with 20 N. The ice pushes up on the puck with 2
N and the earth pulls it down with 2 N. What is the mass of the puck? What is the
acceleration of the puck?

7. Ms. Dry’s dogs are playing tug-of-war. If one dog pulls rightward with 30 N of force, and
the other dog pulls with 46 N left, what is the net force on the rope?

8. How much force is needed to accelerate a 227 kg sled at 6 m/s2 to the right across a
frictionless surface?

9. A 50 kg skater pushed by a friend accelerates 5 m/s2. How much force did the friend
apply?

10. A 5 kg cake is pulled across a table by a horizontal force of 40 N with 8 N of frictional

force. Calculate the acceleration of the object.
Answer key:
1) m= 4 kg
2) FNET= 300 N, up
a) Hint: for velocity, are the forces balanced or unbalanced?
3) m= 0.6 kg
4) a= 32.67 m/s2
5) FNET= 3N, down
a) a= 0.44 m/s2, down
6) m= 0.2 kg
a) a= 100 m/s2
7) FNET= 16 N, left
8) FA= 1362 N
9) FA= 250 N
10) a= 6.4 m/s2
