DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. Description and Operation

A. Description (See Figure 1)

The fan cowl doors are made with an aluminum skin. Aluminum frames,
longerons, and doublers give stiffness and strength. There is a fire
shield bonded to the inner surface of each fan cowl door skin above
waterline 91.4. Each door has two axial locator blades on the forward
edge. These axial locator blades fit into clips in the inlet cowl when
the doors are closed. Each door has three hinges that are attached to
the upper longeron and they hinge on the pylon. You can install a
vortex control device (VCD) on each door. A VCD is installed on only
one fan cowl door so that it is on the inboard side of an installed
engine. There is a rub strip around the inner edge of each fan cowl
door. There are drain scuppers in the lower sections of the doors to
drain water and engine fluids. A hoist point in each fan cowl door
permits you to remove the door from the pylon with a hoist and a sling.
There are two hold-open rods in each fan cowl door.

The left fan cowl door has an integrated drive generator (IDG) access
door and a pressure relief door. There are three latch hooks and a
bulb seal attached to the lower longeron. This door also has the
starter guide hole installed just above the upper attach point of the
hold-open rod.

The right fan cowl door has an oil tank access door and there is a
starter drain/vent in the lower aft corner. A radial restraint is
installed just forward of the starter drain/vent. Three latch keepers
are attached to the lower longeron.

B. Operation

The left and right cowl fan doors enclose the engine fan section. They
permit smooth air passage between the inlet cowl and the thrust
reverser. Access doors permit you to get access to the IDG and the oil
tank with the fan cowl doors in the closed position. A guide hole
permits access to the starter shutoff valve. The hold-open rods hold
the fan cowl door open in one of two positions. There is a pressure
relief door in the left fan cowl door. It opens when the pressure
difference between the fan cowl doors and the engine fan case is 63 to
77 lbf. (280.2 to 342.5 N).

TESTING AND FAULT ISOLATION

1. Testing and Fault Isolation (See Figure 101)

A. General

This procedure is used to make sure the chip detector access/pressure

relief door latches release at the correct pressure.

NOTE: Use a torque wrench with a 3/8 in. (9.5 mm) drive and the torque
wrench adapter, RSE1165.

B. Procedure

(1) Calculate the minimum and maximum torque wrench indications

necessary to open the latches. Use the formula that follows:

Torque indication = 0.5 in.(P)( L )

(L + 1.5 in.)

Where: P = Latch release load

L = Torque wrench effective length

For metric use: 0.0127 m (P)( L )

(L + 38.1 mm)

NOTE: The effective length of the torque wrench is the distance

between the point where force is applied (where the center
of the hand is placed on the wrench handle or the middle of
the grip) and the centerline of the torque wrench drive
(See Fig. 101).

NOTE: The latch release minimum and maximum load range for the
chip detector access/pressure relief door is 63 to 77 lbf
(280.2 to 342.5 N).

Example:

The minimum latch release load = 63 lbf (280.2 N), torque wrench
length = 12.0 in. (304.8 mm).

0.5 in. X 63 lb. ( 12 in. ) = 28 lb.-in.(minimum torque)

(12 in. + 1.5 in.)

0.0127 X 280.2 N ( 304.8 mm ) = 3.2 N.m (minimum torque)

(304.8 mm + 38.1 mm)

Repeat this part of the calculation for the maximum load of 77 lbf
(342.5 N).

0.5 in. X 77 lb. ( 12 in. ) = 34.2 lb.-in. (maximum torque)

TESTING AND FAULT ISOLATION

(12 in. + 1.5 in.)

0.0127 X 342.5 N ( 304.8 mm ) = 3.9 N.m (maximum torque)

(304.8 mm + 38.1 mm)

(2) Make sure the chip detector/pressure relief door is closed and both
latches are engaged.

(3) Put the torque wrench adapter on the torque wrench.

(4) Put the narrow end of the adapter tightly into one of the slots on
the latch.

(5) Apply a right-angle force toward the aft end of the cowl on the
wrench until the latch releases.

(6) Write down the torque wrench indication at the point of latch
release.

(7) Do steps (2), (4), and (5) for the second latch slot.

(8) Write down the force necessary to open each latch. If the force is
outside of the calculated limits, replace the latch.

NOTE: For this example you must replace a latch that takes more
than 34.2 lbin. (3.9 N.m) to open or less than 28 lbin.(3.2
N.m).

REPAIR GENERAL
1. Repair Instructions

A. The repairs are written to put a part back to the same initial strength
and configuration as when it was made.

(a) A numeric entry in the Units Per column shows the quantity of
the part number usage of the part is restricted. Parts which
are not common to all configurations but are associated with a
coded assembly or installation (A, B, etc.) are coded with the
identical letter. If the part is common to all assemblies, the
effectivity column will be blank.

(b) When changes are made that do not coincide with configuration
effectivities, a parenthetical note will be added to show
cumulative effectivity; i.e., (Inlet Cowl Serial No. C/U 1-
40).

(7) Units Per Assembly

(a) A numeric entry in the Units Per column gives the quantity of
the part used on the next higher assembly or installation.

(b) "RF" shown in the Units Per Assembly column. When an

installation or assembly is referenced to other locations for
breakdown to its component parts, the initial location
reflects the Units Per Assembly quantity, and subsequent
locations show "RF".

(c) Common hardware items with large quantity usage, or usage over
99 in any one application, and for shims where quantity must
be determined upon installation, the letters "AR" are used to
show "as required".

(8) Parts made by companies other than Rohr, Inc., are identified by an
appropriate vendor code following the nomenclature. Vendor codes
are in accordance with current issues of Federal Supply Codes for
Manufacturers Cataloging Handbooks H4-1 and H4-2, and are preceded
by the capital letter "V".

(a) Government standard parts such as AN/MS, etc., are not

identified with a vendor code.

(9) The first 13 digits of part numbers exceeding 15 digits will be in

the part number column. The complete number will be found in the
NOMENCLATURE column after the note "ORDER OVERLENGTH P/N ----".
Both numbers will appear in the Numerical Index.

(10) Attaching parts are captioned ATTACHING PARTS and are shown
immediately following the part(s) attached. The *** symbol follows
the last item of the attaching group.
