How People Hurt Animals & Steps to Change This

Humans & animals have been buddies for a long time. This friendship is really old. Animals have been
part of our lives for ages. They provide us with food, clothes, & even companionship. But as we got
smarter and built our societies, we found new ways to hurt these creatures. In many places, animals
suffer because of our needs—whether it’s for food, fashion, fun, or science. We must think about how
we treat them & find ways to make it better. Gandhi once said that taking care of animals shows how
good a nation truly is. In this piece, we'll explore our bond with animals & what changes we need.

Pain for Food

One big way we hurt animals is through what we eat. Factory farming is a great example of this problem.
Billions of chickens & other animals live in awful conditions. They are packed together with hardly any
room to move around, which makes them sick. Sadly, these animals are seen as machines instead of
living beings. They’re just fed until it’s time to kill them. We ought to think more about the ethics of
making food on such a huge scale.

Can we fix this? Yes! Eating less meat could help! Choosing plant-based foods might lower the need for
factory farms and reduce animal suffering too. Paul McCartney put it nicely: "If slaughterhouses had
glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian." Knowing where our food comes from can really make a
difference.

Pain for Clothing

The fashion industry isn’t innocent either when it comes to hurting animals. Leather and fur cost many
creatures their lives. Animals like minks or foxes are kept in tiny cages on fur farms until they’re killed for
their fur. Cows raised for leather often face rough treatment too—and sheep get hurt during wool
shearing.

But there’s some hope! More brands are starting to recognize this problem! Many companies now sell
faux fur & fake leather that look great but don’t harm any animals at all. As shoppers, we have the
power! By choosing clothes that don’t involve hurting animals, we can push fashion to change!

Pain in Entertainment
Animals have been part of entertainment for a long time—like in circuses and zoos. But behind the fun,
lots of these creatures suffer badly. In circuses, they are forced to do silly tricks out of fear and pain. Zoos
often keep them in areas that are nothing like their real homes, making them stressed or bored.

Great news: some changes are happening! Many countries are starting to ban wild animals in circuses &
some zoos are becoming better places like conservation centers that help the animals properly. Still,
there’s much more work to do! We should focus on giving these creatures real homes instead of making
them perform silly tricks for us. Anna Sewell said it best: “If we see cruelty or wrong that we have the
power to stop, and we do nothing, we share the guilt.” We need to help end the struggles these animals
face.

Pain from Experiments

Another big issue is using poor animals for experiments—especially in science and testing cosmetics.
Poor mice & rabbits often go through painful tests for makeup or medicine that hurt them badly—and
many don’t even survive! While some animal testing has helped scientists discover things, thankfully
there are kinder options now.
With all the new technology around us—like computer models—we can replace animal testing with
kinder methods that often work even better! Philosopher Jeremy Bentham once said: “The question is
not ‘Can they reason?’ nor ‘Can they talk?’ but ‘Can they suffer?’” We should keep this in mind as we try
to put an end to animal testing.

Destroying Homes
Another problem happens when humans destroy where animals live by building cities or farms! This
means cutting down trees which leaves many creatures without homes—how sad is that? Climate
change & pollution just make things worse by messing up nature and putting many species at risk!

This calls for teamwork! Governments should protect nature while businesses ought to use eco-friendly
methods. Each one of us can help too by supporting conservation efforts and lowering our own
ecological footprints! John Muir wisely said: “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he
seeks.” Protecting nature also means protecting our furry friends living there.

Conclusion: Moving Towards Kindness

To wrap things up... humans hurt animals in many ways like food choices, clothing styles, entertainment
practices, scientific testing, & destroying their habitats! But there’s hope! By supporting cruelty-free
industries & advocating for better treatment overall... we can truly make a difference together! Each
person matters in creating a kinder world! As Immanuel Kant reminds us: “We can judge the heart of a
man by his treatment of animals.” Let’s team up so everyone gets the kindness & care they deserve!
