Introduction:
This report outlines the methodology and statistical findings for a quantitative study on employees’
experiences of work at Lomond Insurance during the Covid-19 crisis. Lomond Insurance is a large
shipping company, based at Canary Wharf, which insures marine vessels and their cargo. Since
March 2020 employees based at Canary Wharf have worked from home, in response to the Covid-19
crisis and government guidance. Since then, the company has allowed a mix of working from home
and the office.
In 2024 the office lease is up for renewal, and the board of directors is considering downsizing into a
smaller office, and pursuing a greater ‘working from home’ strategy. However, some employees seem
to have enjoyed working from home over the last three years, and others have not. Before a decision
can be made, the executives from Lomond Insurance have commissioned research to investigate
employees’ experiences of working from home over the last few years. A survey was designed and
distributed to a sample of employees. The results of this survey were combined with HR data. This
report presents the methodology of this research, presents a statistical analysis of findings, and offers
some recommendations for the executives.
[Note to student: completing this section will demonstrate that you have met learning objective 1
which requires students to ‘describe the quantitative methodological paradigm, and its underpinning
philosophical assumptions, its strengths and limitations’].
Research design
Sample
Outline the sample, what type of sample is this: probability or non-probability? What are the
benefits and limitations of this approach?
Findings
1. Addition - You will combine survey questions asking employees their views of working from
home more in the future. This will create a single ‘Working from Home Satisfaction’ score. You
will learn how to do this in week 8 of this module.
2. Basic descriptives – How happy are Lomond’s employees to work more from home in the
future? You can show this by using measures of central tendency (AKA ‘averages; mean,
medium, and mode) and measures of dispersion (AKA spread; standard deviation and
range.). You will learn how to do this in week 9 of this module.
3. Independent samples T-test – You will present the results of 3 independent samples t-tests
showing if there is a statistically significant difference in the employees’ desire to continue to
work from home in the future. The first test is to compare scores between men and woman.
The second test is between managers and non-managers. The final test is between those
with caring responsibilities and those without. You will learn how to do this in week 11 of this
module.
4. Correlation – You will present a correlation (along with a scatter graph and trendline)
showing the relationship between satisfaction for working from home scores and employee
extroversion. You will learn how to do this in week 11 of this module.
[Note to student: This, along with the section above, evidences that you have met learning outcome 4:
conduct statistical analysis].
[Note to students]: There are a series of videos in across weeks 9-12 to help you complete this
section of the assignment].
Conclusions
What conclusions can you draw from this analysis?
Link your findings to at least one academic journal article, briefly showing how your findings
relate to the wider literature. This might be a journal paper on the long-term consequences of
working from home, measures of introversion/extroversion, etc.
What recommendations would you make to the Executives? Consider your findings, what
does the data tell us about what changes regarding working from home polices should
happen at Lomond Insurance? These recommendations should be based on the evidence
you have presented.
[Note to student, doing this evidences learning outcome 5 generate evidence-based conclusions,
decisions and recommendations].
