Addition and Subtraction of Decimals Through Thousandths With
and Without Regrouping
Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics 5 Self-Learning Module on Addition and

Subtraction of Decimals Through Thousandths With and Without Regrouping!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the (subject) Self-Learning Module on Addition and Subtraction of

Decimals Through Thousandths With and Without Regrouping!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

 Learn how decimals are to be added and subtracted.

PRETEST

Directions: Write in column then perform the indicated operation.

1. 18.205 + 21.413 =
2. 37.864 - 5.424 =
3. 16.94 – 2.475 =
4. 10.645 + 7. 4 + 12.78 =
5. 40.05 – 8.66 =

5. 1.0 _______ 0.7777
LESSON

LESSON 5: ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF DECIMALS

THROUGH THOUSANDTHS WITH AND WITHOUT
REGROUPING.

EXPLORE AND DISCOVER

Jharie has Php70.00 allowance a day. At recess time, he spent

Php25.50 for a sandwich and Php15.75 for a mineral water. He saves the
rest of his money; how much did he save for a day?

To find the answer, we have to add Php25.50 and Php15.75 then subtract
the sum from Php70.00.

1. When adding/subtracting decimals, write the decimals in column with

the decimal points lined up in the same column.
2. Make sure digits with the same place value are in the same column.
3. Add zeros if desired, so all numbers have the same number of decimal
places.
4. Perform the addition/subtraction as for whole numbers. Bringdown the
decimal point in the same column.

11 699
Solution: 25.50 70.00 70.010
+ 15.75 + 41.25 + 41.2 5
41.25 28.75 28.75

Jharie saved Php28.75.

Examples:

1. Add: 5.656 + 1.342 5.656

+ 2.342
7.398

1 1
2. Add: 14.68 + 2.753 14.680
+ 2.753

3. Add: 1.356 + 7.4 + 12.75 1.365
1 7.400

+ 12.750
21.506

4. Subtract: 0.845 – 0.6 0.845

- 0.600
0.245

7 4
5. Subtract: 38.354 – 7.806 38.354 38.13514
- 7.806 - 7. 8 0 6
