SECTION FOUR: AERIAL AND GROUND SURVEY (SEF 408)

Introduction

Aerial Survey is the collection of geographical data from an elevated

position, typically using aircraft, drones, or satellites. This method allows for
large areas to be covered efficiently, and it is often used for topographic
mapping, environmental monitoring, and infrastructure planning. The key
advantage is that it provides a bird’s-eye view, which can be used to create
detailed maps or 3D models of terrain and features.

Ground Survey involves collecting data from the earth’s surface using tools
like total stations, GPS, and laser scanners. Ground surveys are usually more
precise than aerial surveys but are more time-consuming and cover smaller
areas. They are essential for tasks that require high accuracy, such as
property boundary measurements, construction site layout, and
infrastructure development.

Mission

To provide accurate and efficient geographical data collection solutions

through advanced technologies, helping industries make informed decisions
for sustainable development and resource management.

Vision

To be the leading provider of innovative and high-quality surveying services,

leveraging technology to create precise, reliable, and actionable
geographical data that supports progress in various sectors.

Core Values

1. Accuracy: Commitment to delivering precise and reliable data.

2. Innovation: Continuous improvement through the adoption of the latest

technologies.

3. Integrity: Upholding ethical standards in all surveying processes.

4. Efficiency: Providing timely and cost-effective surveying solutions.

5. Collaboration: Working closely with clients to understand and meet

their unique needs.

Types of Surveys

As the name implies they are two types of survey

Aerial Survey

Aerial surveys utilize remote sensing technologies such as LiDAR,

photogrammetry, and satellite imagery to capture geographical data from
the sky. These techniques can cover vast areas, making them ideal for large-
scale mapping projects, environmental assessments, and infrastructure
monitoring. Aerial surveys excel in:

Large Area Coverage: Mapping vast regions quickly.

Ground Survey

Ground survey involves measuring distances, angles, and elevations on the

earth’s surface. Instruments such as total stations, GNSS (Global Navigation
Satellite System), and laser scanners are used for high-precision
measurements. Ground surveys are known for their accuracy and are
essential in:

Small Area Mapping: Suitable for construction sites, land boundary

demarcations.

Technologies Used in Aerial Survey operation

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging): Uses laser pulses to generate 3D

models of terrain and structures.

Photogrammetry: Involves taking overlapping images from aerial platforms

to create detailed maps.

Satellite Imagery: Captures large areas of the earth from space, useful for
global monitoring.

Technologies Used in Ground Survey Operation

Total Stations: Measure distances and angles precisely for creating

topographic maps and setting out construction layouts.

GNSS: Uses satellites to provide accurate geographic positioning for mapping

and navigation.

Laser Scanners: Capture highly detailed 3D models of surfaces and

structures with extreme accuracy.

Applications of aerial and ground survey

Urban Planning
Aerial surveys are frequently used in urban development for generating
maps, infrastructure design, and assessing growth patterns. Ground surveys
provide detailed measurements for construction sites, ensuring precision in
building layouts and alignment with pre-defined plans.

Environmental Monitoring

Both aerial and ground surveys are crucial in monitoring environmental

changes, such as deforestation, wetland depletion, and climate change
impacts. Aerial LiDAR, in particular, helps detect small changes in terrain,
while ground-based surveys verify these observations.

Construction and Land Development

In the construction industry, surveys are indispensable for site layout,

boundary setting, and ensuring that all structural elements align as planned.
Aerial surveys are used during the early stages for topographic mapping,
while ground surveys handle the fine details of land measurements.

Natural Resource Management

Aerial surveys, particularly through remote sensing, help in monitoring forest

health, assessing mineral deposits, and evaluating water resources. Ground
surveys validate these findings by collecting precise data on the spot.

Advantages and Limitations

Aerial Survey Advantages: Rapid coverage of large areas, cost-effective for

expansive regions, non-intrusive.

Aerial Survey Limitations: Accuracy can decrease in dense areas, susceptible

to weather conditions in covered terrain like forests.

Ground Survey Advantages: High accuracy, especially in small areas and

densely covered terrain.

Ground Survey Limitations: Slow or time-consuming and labor-intensive,

expensive for large-scale projects.

7. Conclusion

Aerial and ground surveys are complementary techniques essential for

gathering geographical data. While aerial surveys offer speed and vast
coverage, ground surveys ensure precision and detail. With advancements in
technology, such as the integration of AI and real-time data collection, the
future of surveying promises even more accuracy, efficiency, and innovative
applications.
