Introduction to Philosophy of the Human Person Q2, Lesson 1
OBJECTIVES:
At the of this Lesson Students should be able to:
• Identify the current disorder in our Environment.
• Explain the philosophical views and how they influence
human action regarding the environment.
• Demonstrate the virtues of Prudence and frugality towards
the environment.
ENVIRONMENTAL PHILOSOPHY

Discipline that studies the moral relationship of human beings with the environment
and its non-human contents.

Philosophers believe that the human person can change the environment to suit his
purposes. This means that as a human person, we interact not only with our fellow
human beings but also with other living and non-living elements in our environment.

Humankind is a part of the world, and we significantly affect our environment in the
same way that changes in our environment affect us.
THE ENVIRONMENTAL VALUE SYSTEMS
Refers to how a person sees and values environmental
concerns.

Ecocentrism- places great value on ecosystems and


biological communities. This view believes that
humankind is part of a greater biological system or
community and that we have a significant ROLE AS
STEWARDS or guardians OF NATURE.

“Nature-centered”
THE ENVIRONMENTAL VALUE SYSTEMS
Anthropocentrism- a philosophical perspective that
puts human needs and interests to be of the highest
value and importance.

This view believes that humans are the most important


species on the planet and they are free to transform
nature and use its resources.

“Human-centered”
“Cornucopian point of view”
THE ENVIRONMENTAL VALUE SYSTEMS

TECHNOCENTRISM- This type of view believes that it can


provide solutions to all environmental problems.
Similar to anthropocentrism it is a worldview that
conceives nature to present human beings.

Environmental problems can be solved through science


and technology.

Three ImportantPrinciples of Sustainability

1. Environmental integrity refers to maintaining the state of the


environment. This means that human activities should not disrupt
the ecosystem and human communities located in the area.

2. Economic efficiency refers to prudence in decision-making


regarding the use of resources to ensure that there is minimum to
zero waste.

Prudence - the ability to regulate one’s actions and behavior.


Frugality - being thrifty with the use of one’s resources.

3. Equity demands that we use our natural resources in such a manner that these
are conserved so that the next generation will be able to use them.

Performance Task 1
Eco-Smart: A Campaign for Environmental Prudence & Frugality

Instructions: Create a short campaign video (3-4 minutes) promoting the virtues of prudence (careful
decision-making) and frugality (mindful consumption) concerning environmental protection. The video
should aim to encourage viewers to be responsible stewards of the environment by making thoughtful,
sustainable choices that minimize waste and preserve resources.
