Teacher’s Notes for Quiz 5:

Sport

Objectives: To learn words connected with the topic of sport

Dictionary skills: Looking up topic-specific words in the dictionary
Tasks: A Ask and answer quiz questions
B Check definitions in the dictionary

Procedure

First of all students ask their partner the quiz questions. Students make notes, and then check
their answers in the dictionary and on the DVD-ROM. Tell students that they can check some of the
answers in the Thesaurus box for sport on the DVD-ROM. For answers 6-10, which are not in the
Thesaurus box, if students are finding them difficult, you could give them the first two letters of the
words to give them a clue as to where to find them in the dictionary.

Tell students that if they use the DVD-ROM, they can select Advanced Search and click Definitions
and key in the important words from the definition to find the right answer. For example, after keying
in “number of points team win”, students will need to select between the two nouns score and draw
or they could narrow the initial search by checking the part-of-speech noun box. Searching in the
definitions for “long race 26 miles” and checking the part-of-speech noun box, students will be taken
to the entry for marathon.

Answers:

1 Thesaurus box sport (n) or dictionary entry pitch (n) - a large area of ground, usually covered
with grass, where team sports are played

2 Thesaurus box - sport (n) - court

3 Thesaurus box - sport (n) - gym

5 cooking - see dictionary entry for tournament - badminton, chess and tennis all collocate

7 penalty (n)

8 marathon (n)

9 decathlon (n)

10 sprint (n)
