Abstract:-
The report details the experience and my contribution in
movie dubbing project.It highlights the techniques used
and suggestions for future dubbing project.
Introduction:-
The dubbing project was assigned by our professor of
Translation Studies,Sir Umer Ahsan.I and my group
members i.e. saira,amina,Kashaf,Saman selected ocean's
8,a 2018 american heist comedy film directed by Gary
Ross and written by Ross and Olivia Milch.The reason for
selecting this movie was that majority of the characters
were female.This did not creat a problem for voice over of
male characters.The purpose of this project was to apply
the theories of translation. Movies is translated from
English language to Urdu language.Translation has been
done both word-for-word as well as sense for sense.The
target language culture was taken into account during
translation.
My Contribution:-
My contribution to this project includes the translation and
voice over of the character,lou.I wrote subtitles for my
character as well.At some places,I conveyed original
meaning by applying dryden's model of metaphase.I
conveyed the sense but changed the structure of
sentences and phrases so that it may not sound awkward
in target language but in some scenes,imitation was
necessary.In the scene 1,Lou says to April:-
"she slept with her cousin,crashed the car.Baby is not
his."This expression is not appropriate for pakistani
culture so adoption was made and by accounting the
context and target language culture I completely changed
these dialogues as:-
"Yeh phir sy mehangi ho gai April.Lagta hai issy peenay
kay liye apna gurda hi bechna pary ga"
This approach was influenced by Cowley's and dryden's
concept of imitation and adaptation respectively.
Techniques:-
A number of techniques were implemented to achieve
desired results.
1-Many softwares were tried but then selected DaVinci
resolve.
2-Added subtitles in target language. It eliminated any
noticeable difference between the original content and
imitation.
3-Lip sync is an important factor.Dialogues were delivered
in time matching the lip movement of the
character,sounding more natural.
4- Mic was used to get a clear voice enhancing lucidity.
5-Voiceover was done in an isolated place to avoid any
kind of noise interruption.it really affects the quality of
sound.
6-Certain techniques were employed on translation of
dialogues.Translation was done according to target
language and target language culture.In some scenes
equivalence effect was tried to achieve while in others
imitation was made where necessary.
Experience:-
I had a great experience working on this project.I got
many new and exciting things to learn.At times,it was
enjoyable but it was frustrating too.I had to retake Voice
multiple times.Sometimes expressions did not come out
the way I wanted.Volume was quite a trouble.I was unable
to deliver dialogues with desired expressions if I try to
speak in high volume.However,I got to know a lot about
screen translation industry.I got to learn about many
softwares.Doing translation was fun.This project also
developed my voice over skills.
Suggestions:-
1-Always choose efficient software,i.e.Davnci
resolve,filmora atc
2-Select software that you can easily handle and can edit
smoothly.
3- Always use high quality equipments.
4-Use Mic.It is really helpful.
5-Record your voice in quite place.If there is still noise
issue,You can use any noise reduction apps like capcut or
noise remover etc.
6- Enhance ability to deliver natural dialogues.Improve
dialogue delivery and expression.
7-Pactice to regulate/modulate pitch and tone to convey
emotion.
8-Try to be more accurate in translation.Pay more
attention on it.It shouldn't sound awkward or inappropriate
in target culture.
9-Stay consistent and dedicated.
Conclusion:-
The PROJECT aimed to reach wider audience through
dubbing.Its objective was to make content Accessible to
audience who can not understand English.The project was
quit helpful.Throught the dubbing and translating,theories
of translation were applied.
It was Successfully translated from English to Urdu
language.I made many mistakes but got much more to
learn.Some techniques used by me are described and
some suggestions for such future project are given.
I thoroughly enjoyed working on this project.
