Reflection on the Chernobyl Disaster (1986)

The Chernobyl Disaster is a tragedy that happened on April 26,1968 that led to be

considered as one of the most destructible events of nuclear energy disaster next to Fukushima

Daiichi.

To be specific, the tragedy happened because of the component malfunction “REACTOR

4 “in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station, there were active workers on the scene currently

experimenting what would happen if the turbines could provide enough energy to keep the

pumps running if there was a loss of power and also even if until the generator’s kicks in.

Due to these circumstances, problems arose for the workers because according to sources

the experiment they did before failed so thinking that running it again will be successful sort out

to be not. Because of these decisions the entire reactor exploded due to its power malfunction

and led to the most disastrous tragedy ever existed.

It became more disastrous furthermore because of the radioactive gasses that were

exposed and released to the atmosphere that affected almost 45000 - 116000 people to be forced

evacuated because of how poisonous the gas can be, not only it affected evacuated people but

also it caused the workers and rescuers to be killed.

In my perspective, the most liable and should be punished are the reactor designers and

specially the senior workers that are operating the experiment, there’s no other people to be liable

for which they are the only people who knows how to operate the “REACTOR 4” properly.

According to sources, the reactor’s design contained flaws and limited safety features that

added to be a cause for the tragedy. As a future mechanical engineer, we should know that

before we design or build a specific component, especially machines, we should know its

constraints, limitations, and what are the safety factors included before we proceed with building

it. Knowing this can help us to furthermore understand what are the potential effects that our

machine can have if it produces errors or malfunctions, this also avoids circumstances such as

fatalities, injuries that can happen to the people handling it.

As for the senior workers, it is said that one of the employees told their senior to void the

test because it’s dangerous and unsuccessful but still due to its authority the senior workers didn’t

listen to the opinions of his team which led to a unfruitful tragedy. In my opinion, it is best to

listen to everyone because we as engineers don’t know everything, it is a crucial factor for us

engineers to listen to for us to understand and succeed.

As a future leader, it is best to opt on communicating clearly with others especially when

lives are at stake. Essentially, listening with your colleagues, exchanging suggestions, and being

open to receiving opinions can help avoid these circumstances. Lastly, having a plan if ever

possible errors exist can help us generate more ideas and solutions on how to avoid it.

“I am a Mechanical Engineer and I’m going to be a Future Leader someday.”
