ENERGY

INTER ONVERSION
Energy interconversion is the transformation of energy from one
form to another. This is a fundamental principle in physics, and it
plays a crucial role in many natural and technological processes.

What is Energy?
Energy is the capacity to do work. Work is defined as the force applied over a distance. In essence,
energy is the ability to cause changes or exert an influence. It exists in various forms, including
mechanical, thermal, electrical, chemical, and light energy.

Mechanical
The energy associated with motion and position, such as kinetic and potential energy.

Thermal
The energy related to heat, measured by temperature and associated with the random motion of
molecules.

Electrical
The energy carried by moving electric charges, such as in an electric current.

Chemical
The energy stored in the bonds between atoms and molecules, released during chemical reactions.
Chemical Energy into Mechanical
Energy
Chemical energy stored in fuels, like gasoline or food, can be converted into mechanical
energy, which is the energy of motion. This conversion happens in engines, where chemical
reactions release energy that drives pistons and wheels.

Chemical Energy
Energy stored in fuel molecules.

Combustion
Burning fuel releases heat and energy.

Mechanical Energy
Energy of motion and position in moving parts.
Electric Energy into Chemical Energy
Electric energy can be used to drive chemical reactions, converting it into chemical energy. This is the basis of
electrolysis, where electricity breaks down water into hydrogen and oxygen gas. This stored chemical energy can
later be released by burning the hydrogen.

Light Energy into Chemical
Energy
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants convert light energy from the sun
into chemical energy stored in sugar molecules. This stored energy is then used
for growth and other life processes.

1 Light Energy
Energy from the sun.

2 Photosynthesis

energy.

3 Chemical Energy
Energy stored in sugar molecules.
