1. Explain how electrons from NADH and FADH2 flow through the electron transport chain
with the production of ATP. [10 marks ]
Mark
Electrons within NADH and FADH2 from the Krebs cycle enter the 1
electron transport chain which (consists of a series of molecules) embedded
in the inner membrane of mitochondrion.
Each molecule contains of one or several electron carrier. 1
Electrons are passed from one carrier to another at progressively lower 1
energy levels.
The carrier molecule that receives an electron undergoes reduction, and 1
the one losing electron is undergoing oxidation.
A small amount of energy is released during each transfer (through the 1
series of oxidation and reduction in electron transport chain).
Electrons from NADH enter the electron transport chain at NADH 1
dehydrogenase complex
Whereas electrons from FADH2 enter at a lower energy level, that is at 1
complex II to ubiquinone molecule.
The final electron carrier in the chain, transfer the electrons to oxygen to 1
form water.
The energy released by the electron transport chain is used to pump 1
hydrogen ions (H+) from the matrix into the intermembrane space.
This builds up a transmembrane electrochemical proton (H+) gradient. 1
When protons diffuse out from the intermembrane space through the ATP 1
synthetase into the mitochondrial matrix, ATP is synthesized from ADP
and Pi
Each NADH generates 3 ATP 1
And each FADH2 generates 2 ATP. 1
