The Transportation Engineering
Transportation engineering or transport
engineering is the application of technology
and scientific principles to the planning,
functional design, operation and management
of facilities for any mode of transportation in
order to provide for the safe, efficient, rapid,
comfortable, convenient, economical, and
environmentally compatible movement of
people and goods.
The Traffic Engineering
• Traffic engineering is a branch of civil
engineering that uses engineering techniques
to achieve the safe and efficient movement of
people and goods on roadways.
• It focuses mainly on safe and efficient traffic
flow.
• Traffic engineering deals with the functional
part of transportation system, except the
infrastructures provided.

Multidisciplines involved in
Transportation and Traffic Engineering
Traffic Engineering coverage
• Traffic Engineering is another discipline that falls
under the larger umbrella of Transportation
Engineering. Traffic can refer to the movement of
not only vehicles such as cars and trucks that
travel on roads and highwasy, but also to people
and pedestrian paths and walkways. Traffic
Engineers are specialists at understanding and
changing the technical aspects of road design to
maximise traffic flow and reduce congestion.
Traffic Engineering functions
• Traffic Engineers are required to be proficient
in data analysis, modelling (e.g. to predict
future traffic growth), simulations and
problem solving when assessing traffic flows,
accident reports and much more.
Traffic Flow
Traffic Flow
• Complex: between vehicles and
drivers, among vehicles
• Stochastic: variability in outcome,
cannot predict with certainty
Examples--Basic Concepts
• To define and apply basic measures of traffic
flow, including;
–Speed
–Volume
–Density
–Spacing and Headway
–Lane occupancy
–Clearance and gap

Important traffic flow parameters

– [space mean speed]…………..read yourself
• Flowrate vehicles/hr
• Density
• Headway
• Hetrogenity
