PAUNANG SALITA

Halina at sama-sama tayong umawit habang buong pag-asa at masaya nating

LITURGICAL NOTES
After the long season of Ordinary Time or also known as the Time Throughout the Year,
the music of the Advent season greets us like a breath of fresh air. But there is so much
music now with this new compositions and so little time in which we sing it! This is
especially true during particular year when the season is only three weeks long.

Music should be simple

The tradition of using music that is more “subdued” during the season has been given
predominance by the direction in article 313 of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal
(GIRM):

“In advent the organ and other musical instruments should be used in moderation that is
consistent with the season’s character and does not anticipate the full joy of the Nativity of
the Lord.”

“During Advent musical, instruments should be played with a moderation that is in keeping
with the spirit of joyful expectation characteristic of this season, but does not anticipate
the fullness of joy belonging to the celebration of the nativity of the Lord.”
(no. 41 Ceremonial of Bishops, Congregation for Divine Worship, 14 September 1984)

Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship (STL) no. 114 suggests that during Advent
“Musical instruments should be used in moderation and should not anticipate the full joy of
the Nativity of the Lord.”

The music during the season of Advent therefore takes on a sense of watching and
waiting, a certain starkness and anticipation. Simplifying musical arrangements and
instrumentation creates a wonderful contrast between the waiting period of Advent and the
joyful time of Christmas.

This stops short of the direction regarding Lent, which limits instruments to the
accompaniment of singing. Yet it certainly calls for the music to be more simple and
unadorned than in the other seasons. Even aside from the texts that are sung, a worshipper
should sense that the music sounds like Advent.

Ang Panginoon ay darating.

Liwanag Niya ay magniningning,
kasama ng mga anghel, at kerubin.

Dala ng Diyos sa dukha't salat,

pag-asang sa hirap magwawakas.
Ang bukid natin at lupain,
uunlad, magbubunga't aanihin.

REFRAINAng pangako ng Diyos, The last verse is from the prophecy

darating ang Manunubos! of Isaiah 7: 10-15.
Ang paglingap Niya sa Kanyang bayan,
mahahayag, makakamtan.
Hahantong at magtatagpo,
ang mundong nawalay sa puso.
Sa pagdurusa, tayo'y tubusin,
ang sangkatauhan ay hanguin.

Sa Panginoo'y maghihintay,
liwanag Niya ang siyang gagabay
sa bawat pusong naghahanap,
at nalulumbay. ( REF )

magluluwal ng isang Supling
