The history of English Literature starts with the Germanic tradition of Anglo-Saxon settlers which
were around 5th to 11th century AD and the first long narrative poems in the history of English
Literature were Beowulf and Widsith. These two were highly narrative poems of this early period
of the history of English Literature. Beowulf is be considered as the first English Epic poem and
some of the other famous works produced during the Old English Literature include, Genesis,
Exodus, The Wanderer, Wife’s lament, Husband’s message, The battle of Maldon etc. Earlier,
to understand the temperament of readers, writers would make use of alteration rather than a
rhyming scheme. Moreover, some of the famous writers of old English literature were Cynewulf
and Caedmon.
The Anglo-Saxon or Old English Period (450–1066),

Oral literature dominated the first part of this period—at least until the seventh century.

Caedmon and Cynewulf, are notable; but, much of the literature during this time was a translation of
something else or otherwise legal, medicinal, or religious.

Geoffrey Chaucer (1340s – 1400): Father of English poetry. The


Morning Star of the Renaissance. Canterbury Tales. (a collection of twenty-
four stories that runs to over 17,000 lines between a group of pilgrims from all walks of life,
they were going to the shrine of St. Becket.

POETIC/LITERARY DEVICES
Alliteration: The repetition of the same sound at the beginning of two or more words in a line
of poetry.

Imagery: The use of language to create CLEAR mental images in the reader’s mind.

Personification; GIVING human quality to non-living object , smiling cat, smiling sun

Simile: A comparison of two unlike things using the words “like” or “as.” She is like a butterfly.
Metaphor: A comparison of two unlike things without using the words “like” or “as.” Ali is a lion

Enjambment: When a sentence continues into two or more lines in a poem

Types of poetry

1- Narrative poems: poetic form that tells stories and


tales through verses.

2- Epic poetry: a length narrative poem. It highlights


the details, features, and journey of its main hero
from a remote past.
3- Dramatic poetry is poetic form that tells a story to
its readers and usually has a narrator. ‘My Last
Duchess’ by Robert Browning is a beautiful dark
poem
