1.0 Introduction

The Engineering & Sciences students of Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of the September
2024 batch of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) will organize University Social
Responsibility (USR) program called Down to Earth (DTE) Project, encouraged by the Islamic
and Moral Studies Department in UTP.

We are aiming to educate teenagers about the importance of climate action by providing them
with the knowledge and tools they need to make a positive impact. Our goal is to inspire the
students to understand the challenges posed by climate change, explore sustainable practices,
raise awareness among them and teach them to become advocates for environmental
responsibility in their communities. At the same time, we, THIRTREES will also gain hands-on
experience together with the students through a talk and exciting teamwork activities. This
project which is coincidence with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 13 – Climate
Action and the slogan of “Be A Part of the Solution, Not the Pollution”, we hope to empower the
students to take meaningful action and create a more sustainable future together to ensure that
the voices of youth are heard in the fight against climate change.

Our group aims to carry out the following aspirations by the end of the project:

i. To educate students with a clear understanding of climate change, its causes, and its
impacts on the environment, society, and the economy.
ii. To encourage students to think critically about climate-related issues, such as
sustainability, renewable energy, and the role of individual and collective actions.
iii. To teach practical steps that students can take in their daily lives to reduce their
carbon footprint, such as recycling, conserving energy, and using public transport.
iv. To inspire students to engage actively in climate action through discussions, projects,
and community initiatives, empowering them to make a difference.

2.2 - Description of Activities

120 students of SMKA SULTAN AZLAN SHAH were divided into two big groups which
consisted of 60 students each, Group A and Group B. Each big group was separated into five
smaller groups for their explorace activities. Hence, there were 10 groups in the whole project.

2.2.1 - Awareness Talk

As part of our community engagement project, we conducted an educational talk for students.
The talk was conveyed by Yusuf Fahim bin A. Fadil and focused on spreading awareness about
climate action. The goal was to inform and inspire students to take active roles in addressing
climate change.

4.0 Impact on the Community

From this project, we aim to achieve all the goals mentioned for us to ensure that this issue can
be solved from the beginning. Our targeted people are specifically for high school students so
these are the impacts that can be achieved.

Early Awareness about Climate Change

 Give exposure to high school students about the importance of saving our environment
through such beneficial activities.

Release Stress

 Students will be doing so many activities that can help reducing their education stress
 This project can be counted as students’ cocurricular marks for those who attend this
session. Hence, it encourages students and teachers to join this activity.

Good Engagement Between Students

 Fun activities will help the students to strengthen their bond between them by doing
group activities and building such good environments.
 Teachers will also contribute themselves to participate in these activities to ensure that
the harmony between students and teachers is maintained.

Provide New Beneficial Developments

 School managements will take part in this continuous objective by providing new
developments that specifically related to the climate change objectives as to make sure
that the school will keep growing better.

Maximize Safety Environment

 As an effective result, people in the school will make use of all the safety environments
and facilities, for example the recycling bins, zebra walkway and stairs handle.
 Climate change issues will be one of the main topics that school will highlight just like the
importance of one’s safety.

4.1 - Feedback Highlights from Participants

Feedback from participants provides an essential perspective on the effectiveness and

impact of the recent program we held at SMKA SULTAN AZLAN SHAH. To ensure a thorough
assessment, feedback was collected from students and group members through surveys and
informal discussions. The goal of gathering this feedback was to understand the successes of
the program, highlight areas where it could be improved, and ensure it meets the needs of
future participants.

Participant satisfaction was generally high, with both students and group members
indicating that the program met their expectations. According to the survey results, 90% of
participants rated the program as “satisfactory” or “very satisfactory.” Students appreciated the
hands-on activities and collaborative games, while also highlighted the value of the program’s

Page | 12
structure, which kept students actively involved. A few participants, however, suggested that
extending the program’s duration could allow for a more thorough exploration of certain aspects.

The positive, collaborative environment created by the program was frequently cited as a
strength. Students felt that the program encouraged them to work together in a way that
fostered mutual respect and teamwork, especially during explorace and team-building games.
They appreciated the opportunity to engage in group activities, which allowed them to share
ideas and learn from each other. Teachers quoted that the program helped students build
confidence and communication skills in a supportive setting.

However, there are several areas where the experience can be enhanced for even
greater impact. For the educational talk, increasing interactivity by incorporating live polls,
questions, or quizzes would keep students engaged and offer a way to gauge their
understanding in real-time. Adding more personal stories or case studies could help make the
topic feel more relatable, making them easier to grasp. The explorace activity can be improved
by diversifying the challenges to cover a wider range of environmental issues, such as
renewable energy or biodiversity conservation, giving participants a broader perspective on
climate action. Additionally, incorporating reflection time after each task would allow students to
internalize the lessons learned and make connections to their daily lives.

The overall impact of this project, comprising both the talk on climate action and the
explorace team-building games can be assessed in terms of educational, social, and behavioral
outcomes. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of climate change, its causes, effects,
and potential solutions. The interactive format of explorace, where students solve real-world
environmental problems, helps translate theoretical knowledge into practical, actionable
understanding. This hands-on approach makes the learning experience more memorable and
impactful. By learning about climate action and experiencing it through the games, students may
feel empowered to contribute to positive environmental changes, both at the local level and on a
broader scale.

Overall, students may appreciate the mix of education and action. They will likely enjoy
the interactive nature of explorace, while also finding the talk on climate action both informative
and motivational. However, a few may feel that more opportunities for interaction or clearer
explanations could enhance the experience.

5.0 Conclusion

This Down to Earth (DTE) project, specifically our group, mainly focuses on giving
awareness to young people about our international sustainable development goals
(SDG). To be exact, the 13th SDG which is climate action. This project will certainly
open their mind to be more precise about current environmental issues. We hope that
this particular project will have its full impact and can be repeated in the future.
