Chap 1:
Uses of reflection:

Mirrors are usually made out of ordinary glass or coated plastic

The back of mirrors are covered in shiny metal foil that reflects light very well

Mirrors are good reflectors

Most shiny, smooth surfaces are good reflectors

Dark, dull surfaces are poor reflectors as the beam of light is not able to bounce of the
objects, instead is reflected by it

Mirrors are useful as they help see things that we normally cannot

Rear view mirrors help us see what is behind us

More uses of mirrors:

Dentists - To see the back of our mouths
Doctors - To see into difficult places
Drivers - To see what is behind them

Mirrors help us see behind us, around us and over us and objects as well

Chap 2:
Ray Diagrams:

A narrow stream of light is called a ray

A group of rays is called a beam

When a torch or any other source of light is pointed at a dark surface, the light does NOT
reflect but is visible on the object or surface

The beam of light leaves the torch and travels through the air, in the direction that it is
pointed in, until it hits the surface

Ray boxes are used to investigate light and they produce a good ray of light to use
Ray boxes are used to investigate light and they produce a good ray of light to use

We can follow the journey light takes by using ray diagrams

Chap 3:
Light changing direction:

Flat mirrors reflect an identical image of an object.

This is called a true likeness

This is because the smooth, shiny surface does not scatter light
This is how we see ourselves in the mirror:

The light source shines light on us which travels to the mirror and bounces back to our
eyes

The light that reaches the mirror is called an incident ray

The angle at which the incident ray meets the normal line is called the angle of incidence

The light that leaves the mirror is called the reflected ray

The angle at which the reflected ray is reflected from the normal line is called the angle of
reflection

Both angles are always the same

Angle of incidence = angle of reflection
