Read the passage and answer the questions.

TEENAGERS AND MEDIA CONSUMPTION

Surveys show that many kids are addicted to their smartphones and other mobile
devices. Teenagers are spending a lot of time connecting to their screens – about a
quarter of their day to be exact.
The average teen between 13 and 18 spends about nine hours a day consuming
media that is outside of their school and homework. Kids aged 8 to 12, or tweens,
are spending about six hours in front of screens. They are watching shows, playing
games, connecting on social media and listening to music – sometimes all at the
same time.
Multitasking is the new normal when it comes to homework time. According to a
survey, most teens listen to music while doing their homework, but many also watch
TV (51%) and text (60%). Their responses from the survey indicate that they don’t
think this is a problem and don’t believe it has any effect on the quality of their work.
However, there is evidence suggesting that multitasking may make it harder to retain
information and that you might perform more poorly on the tasks you are doing.
Surveys also find that kids apparently spend more time-consuming media than
connecting with their parents and even their teachers.

29. How much time are teenagers spending using smart phones?

30. What do they do with smart phones?

31. What is the new normal when it is homework time?

32. Does multitasking affect the quality of teens’ homework?

33. Do most teens think that multitasking is not good for their study?

34. Apart from the bad effect on their study, what is another effect of kids using
smart phones?

Read the passage and choose the best option (A, B, C, or D) to indicate the
correct answer to each of the following questions.
As a high school student, I think I have a thorough understanding of the reasons
why teenagers drink alcohol.
Most people would agree that alcohol can be dangerous and quite damaging,
directly or indirectly. The only people who believe otherwise are trying to ignore this fact.
Most people would agree that being drunk isn’t very pleasant since they lose
control over many of their actions, and afterwards, as a direct result, feel terribly sick.

BỔ TRỢ KIẾN THỨC TIẾNG ANH CẤP THCS LỚP 8 - QUYỂN 1 17

Personally, I feel as though vomiting isn’t much fun, but maybe it’s me.
Okay, let’s be entirely honest. What enjoyment is gained from drinking? I think I
have an answer: Drinking gives a sense of satisfaction.
When I was a secondary school student, my English teacher, for example, put
an envelope on his desk that was labelled “dirty pictures” and he said nobody was to
touch it. This certainly encouraged our curiosity. Similarly, a child feels strongly curious
when being told she or he cannot drink alcohol. Every child loves to disobey the “rules”.
Therefore, she or he wants to try it. The reason why drinking is so popular among high
school students is because they think it is fun and acceptable to break rules.
I have only one piece of advice for these drinkers: take responsibility for yourself
and ask yourself why you are drinking. Teenagers couldn’t give an intelligent answer
to justify their actions. And “It’s fun!” is not an intelligent answer. In short, don’t do this
silly thing, you are impressing no one but other immature people.

35. According to the passage, we know that the writer is ________

A. a high school student.

B. a secondary school student.

The digital landscape has put increased pressure on teenagers today, and we
feel it. There are so many social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,
Snapchat, Tumblr, you name it. I made a conscious decision to avoid Snapchat and
Instagram I saw the social pressure they were putting on my 14-year-old little sister.
If my mum turned off the Wi-Fi at 11 pm, my sister would beg me to turn my phone
into a hotspot. She always needed to load her Snapchat stories one more time or to
reply to a message that had come in two minutes ago because she didn’t want her
friend to feel ignored. If I refused, she could get disappointed and say I was ruining

BỔ TRỢ KIẾN THỨC TIẾNG ANH CẤP THCS LỚP 8 - QUYỂN 1 23

her social life. Even as a teenager as well, I sometimes find this craze a little puzzling.
A new study has found that teenagers who engage with social media during the
night could be damaging their sleep and increasing their risk of anxiety and depression.
In the study, teenagers were asked about the pressure they felt to make themselves
available 24/7 and the resulting anxiety if they did not respond immediately to texts or
posts. The study shows that teens are keen on social media that a fifth of secondary
school pupils will wake up at night and log on just to make sure they don’t miss out.
Perhaps the worst thing about this is that teenagers need more sleep than adults do,
so night-time social media use could be harmful to their health. A lack of sleep can
make teenagers tired, irritable, and depressed.

29. Who in the writer’s family is addicted to social media?

30. Why did the writer avoid using social media?

32. What are the effects of using social media at night on teenagers?
