CHAPTER 1

Communication skills are one of the interpersonal skills that


play a vital role in a society in a way this interpersonal skill
is utilized by students, teachers, and many businessmen to
communicate and to transact with their colleagues effectively.
Also, communication skills are very useful and essential to build
relationships with others through interaction and communication.
According to an article that was published in the year 2022,
people with good communication abilities can understand others
and be understood by them. These skills need several abilities,
including listening, watching, and having empathy. In everyday
life, these skills are essential to expressing ideas to others,
building a confident attitude, respect for others, and public
speaking. Many people can advance in their careers by improving
their communication skills.
On the other hand, according to an article published by Peterson
and reviewed by Benz (2022), interpersonal skills are the set of
skills we use to interact and communicate with others
We demonstrate these skills whenever we engage with people around
us, and they determine our ability to build relationships and
work with others. Having strong interpersonal skills can improve
every individual’s ability to do well in interviews and build
productive, long-lasting relationships in their personal and
professional life.
Additionally, an article written by Gattig (2021) says that the
best communicators actively listen to others while still
providing clear information. They have the capacity to receive
feedback, both verbal and nonverbal, and to communicate ideas and
opinions in a way that is inclusive of others. A connection with
other people is necessary for effective communication. It
involves dancing with a partner who occasionally moves in
unexpected ways. This means that being in tune with your audience
is the most effective skill you can use. It entails listening to
and responding to its requirements, as well as acting immediately
after receiving input. It entails engaging in the dialogue that
your audience desires.
Furthermore, workplace communication statistics show that 86% of
employees and executives cite the lack of effective collaboration
and communication as the main causes of workplace failures, while
teams who communicate effectively may increase their productivity
by as much as 25% (Workplace Communication Statistics, 2022).
This statement shows that the workplace fails because of a lack
of effective collaboration and communication, also this will lead
to the decrease of the economy of the country. Therefore, there
is a need to gradually practice and utilize the interpersonal
skills especially communication skills of every individual for
them to be more productive, and create professional, competent,
service-oriented citizens of the community and the country as
well despite the communication barriers.
There are many types of interpersonal skills that every
individual has and one of these
interpersonal skills is the communication skills. Mothers,
father, students, and teachers, young or old have their
interpersonal skills like communication skills and they can use
these whenever they are with the people around them.
Specifically, whenever they are performing essential tasks. While
there is a need to use interpersonal skills because of their
significant role in the workplace, we also believe that
interpersonal skills can also be applied in school institutions.
As of the year 2022, 22nd day in August, the face-to-face classes
started for the elementary and high school public schools. Kids
and students are pretty excited about preparing things for the
face-to-face classes after two years of blended learning. Other
parents on the other hand are having a difficult time budgeting
for the necessary things needed for the face-to-face class most
especially the poor ones. However, they are still eager and
willing to sacrifice just to send their children to school
because they know that education is very important and their
children need this.
Education plays a vital role in everybody’s life. Education is
the process of teaching, helping, equipping, educating, training,
and leading students to their dreams toward their future. In
school, students, teachers, staffs and others are interacting
with each other and this situation helps students to build a good
relationship with the people around them. In addition, students’
skills in communication are quite enhanced during conversation
with others and boost their confidence which can be a good weapon
to become a good, organized, educated, and well-practiced person
our parents happy.
Usefulness of the communication skills of every student to
properly utilize it anytime and anywhere in school. Therefore,
this study will be carried out in order to raise awareness among
students who are having difficulty with their communication
within the school, to figure out how people can assist students
to improve their communication skills and how it will be
benefiting their communication with others effectively.
Undoubtedly, school is where the students, staffs, teachers and
others interact. However, there are communication barriers that
affect their conversations especially during the class
discussion. And this situation will negatively affect students’
productivity, engagement, retention, and trust.
Libon Private high school – Senior High School Department is one
of the schools that was observed having face-to-face classes. And
because of this situation most of the students in senior high
school were having a hard time communicating with each other.
Coping up to understand the teachers during the class discussion
and the other students during breaks when they are talking are
examples of the outcome of communication barriers. This research
was conducted because not only it helps students, teachers and
staff’s communication skills to be practiced and strengthened but
also to know exactly the barriers encountered of the Senior High
School Students in Libon Private high school.
Student practice communication skills for them to be more
interactive, competitive, and consistent learner. On the other
hand, though there are communication barriers, we still need to
continue interacting with others through our interpersonal
communication skills for us to avoid communication breakdown.

This study will seek to identify the barriers encountered in the


communication skills of senior high school students. Also,
analyzed and learned the effectiveness and importance of using
communication skills in students’ everyday lives.
The purpose of this study is to aid and help students who are
challenged and struggling to communicate effectively during this
time of face-to-face classes. Students can practice communication
effectively anytime or anywhere with their enhanced communication
skills. Not all of the students can cope with the lesson or even
in the conversation with the other students.

This study will find out the barriers encountered in the


communication skills of senior high school students in Libon
Private High School. Also, the usefulness of the communication
skills of every student to proper utilize it anytime and anywhere
in the school.

Therefore, this study will be carried out in order to raise awareness


among students who are having difficulty with their communication
within the school, to figure out how people can assist students to
improve their communication skills and how it will be benefiting
their communication with others effectively.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM


The study will determined the barriers on communication skills of
the senior high school student in Libon Private high school. The
researches will sought to find the answers on the following
question:
1.What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:
a. Age

b. Sex

2.What are the challenges encountered in communication skills of


the SHS students in terms of:
a. Behavioral
b. Cultural

3. What suggestions can be derived based on the findings of the


study?

ASSUMPTION OF THE STUDY


The study is anchored to the assumption that follows:
1. The demographic profile of the respondent in terms of age
ranges from 16 to 17 and in terms of sex is female and male.
2. The challenges faced by senior high school students in
communication skills, particularly in behavioral and cultural
aspects, may vary.
3. The study findings suggest enhancing communication skills
among senior high school students at Libon Private High School
through an educational learning activity that can be suggested to
the english teacher.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study focused in determining the barriers encountered in


communications skills of the senior high school student in Libon
Private High School. The researchers conducted this study in
Libon Private High School, senior high school within the year
2023-2024. The main objective of the study is to help students
identify the barriers that they have encountered in communication
skills and also to help them enhance their communication skills.
The researchers chose this topic to know and better understand
how barriers in communication skills of the students affects
their performance especially in school. Moreover, this study also
gives the student an information about the techniques on how to
avoid the barriers in communication skills by enhancing it.
This study is delimited to the grade 11 humss senior
high students. The elementary, junior high, other strands of
grade 11 and grade 12 deparment are not conluded.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to provide data on what are the


barriers the students of grade 11- hums might encounter in
communication skills in libon private high school. This study
would be useful to the following:

STUDENT.This study will provide more insight on what barriers


they might encounter in communication skills and how they can
overcome the problems.
TEACHERS.This research will help to understand and provide a
better teaching technique to shape the student communication
skills and to understand their students communication capability.
SCHOOL. This study will help to provide knowledge, awareness and
ideas regarding the barriers they might encounter to help students
overcome and improve their communication skills.

COMMUNICATION.This study will help to raise awareness about the


possible outcomes of a communication with the effects of barrier
between the conversation.

FUTURE RESEARCHERS. The findings to the study will be helpful to


researchers who carry out similar researchers in the future.
PARENT. The research help to understand the effects of having
barriers during conversation with their child and to learn about
how to communicate properly. This study will help to encourage,
guide, and help their children on their problems and have the
opportunity to help improve their children’s academic performance
when includes communication.
ENGLISH TEACHERS. This study will help to provide alertness and
knowledge on how they will handle a student who experiences
barriers in communication in terms of the English language.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
To have a better comprehension and clear understanding of the
study, the following terms were defined conceptually and
operationally.
Communication Skills. The ability for an individual to accurately
convey a message to another person or group of people. This is an
important skill set to have as a student because the exchange of
information is an act that is constantly occurring in everyday
life. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, (2022),
Communication skills allow you to understand and be understood by
others. These can include but are not limited to effectively
communicating ideas to others, actively listening in
conversations, giving and receiving critical feedback, and public
speaking. In this study, communication skills help us to
understand the differences in how to communicate through face-to-
face interactions, phone conversations, and digital
communications like email and social media.

Barriers. Defined as obstacles that one may face when attempting to


effectively communicate with another person. These barriers can
be anything that can misrepresent and/or avert someone during the
communication process. According to Merriam-Webster (2021)
barrier refers to an obstacle or obstruction that hinders
progress or restricts movement. In this study, barrier refers to
something such as a rule, law, or policy that makes it difficult
or impossible for something to happen or be achieved.
Encountered. According to Cambridge Dictionary (2021) the term
“encountered” means to come across or experience something, often
unexpectedly or by chance. In this study, encounter is to come
upon or meet with, especially unexpectedly.
Behavioral. Pertaining to reactions made in response to social
stimuli or reaction. behavioral relating to or concerned with the
social, psychological, and emotional factors that affect the
person decisions and behavior. According to Merriam-Webster
(2021) behavioral pertains to actions, conduct, or the way people
or organisms behave in response to certain stimuli or situations.
In this study, behavioral means relating to the behavior of a
person or to the study of their behavior.
Cultural. According to Oxford Learner's Dictionaries (2021),
culture refers to anything related to the customs, beliefs,
practices, and social behaviors of a particular group of people
or society. In this study, cultural refers to the position that
the ideas, meanings, beliefs and values people may learn as
members of society determines human nature. People are what they
learn.
Language. Is a structured system of communication that consists
of grammar and vocabulary. It is the primary means by which
humans convey meaning, both in spoken and written forms, and may
also be conveyed through sign languages. Human language is
characterized by its cultural and historical diversity, with
significant variations observed between cultures and across time.
According to Cambridge Dictionary (2021), language refers to a
system of communication consisting of sounds, words, and grammar
used by a community or country. In this study, language refers to
a particular subject as the language of that subject.
Environmental barrier. Include a lack of family support,
architectural barriers, a negative attitude from society towards
individuals with disabilities, and public policy. According to
Oxford Learner's Dictionaries (2021), environmental relates to
the natural surroundings and conditions in which an organism,
person, or community exists. In this study, environmental means
relating to or caused by the surroundings in which someone lives
or something exists.
