Question 01
A 220 V, 10A rated, 1200 RPM separately excited DC motor has an armature resistance of
0.7 Ω and inductance of 50 mH. The motor is supplied from a single phase fully controlled
converter operating from a 220 V, 50 Hz, single phase supply.
I. If the motor operates with a firing angle of α = 30°, at what speed the motor will supply
full load torque. Will the conduction be continuous under this condition?
II. The speed of the motor is controlled by varying the firing angle of the converter while
the load torque is maintained constant at the rated value. Find the power factor of the
converter as a function of the motor speed. Assume continuous conduction and ripple
free armature current.
Question 02
Question 03
A three-phase full wave rectifier supplies a resistive capacitive load of 45 A from a 400 V.
three-phase 50 Hz supply. Find out the value of the load capacitance such that the load voltage
ripple is less than 5 %.

Question 04
II. A three phase fully controlled converter supplies a 200 V 1000 RPM, 45 A rated
separately excited DC motor from a 400 V, three-phase, 50 Hz supply. The motor holds
an overhauling load at 900 RPM while producing full load torque. The motor has an
armature resistance of 0.2 Ω. What should be the firing angle? Assume continuous
conduction.
Question 05
A 230 V, 1500 RPM, 50A rated, separately excited DC motor with armature resistance of 0.4
Ω if fed from a three-phase half-controlled rectifier. The available AC source is 400 V, 50 Hz.
A Y/Δ connected transformer is used to feed the armature so that the motor terminal voltage
equals rated voltage when converter firing angle is zero.
I. Calculate the transformer turns ratio.
II. Calculate the firing angle when,
a) The motor is running at 1200 RPM and rated torque.
b) 1500 RPM and half the rated torque.
Question 06
A battery with a nominal voltage of 220 V, capacity of 120 Ah and internal resistance of 10
mΩ need to be charged at a constant current 0.2C rate, from a three-phase 400 V 50 Hz power
supply. Which of the following converters will give better performance with respect to input
current displacement factor, distortion factor and power factor? Assume that the battery internal
resistance remains unchanged during the charging.
a) Three-phase fully controlled converter
b) Three-phase half-controlled converter
