Christians understand God and how they relate to Him.
I hope this book encourages you to grow closer to God,
to other believers, and to a local church body that
adheres to the Word of God.

God, I ask You to help me understand my


relationship with You in a greater way as I read this
book. I want to become more like Jesus and I realize
that I can only do that with Your help. I ask that You
would teach me Your Word through the help of the
Holy Spirit. Amen.

1 RECEIVING GOD

HELP.
I love God because he listened to me, listened as I
begged for mercy. He listened so intently as I laid out my case before
him. Death stared me in the face, hell was hard on my heels. Up
against it, I didn't know which way to turn; then I called out to
God for help: "Please, God!" I cried out. "Save my life!" God is
gracious—it is he who makes things right, our most compassionate
God. God takes the side of the helpless; when I was at the end of
my rope, he saved me.
Psalms 116:1-6
The Message

Why do people ask for help? Sometimes it’s because they


are short on money, or may not have a ride to a destination, or a
box may be too heavy to lift alone.

Help can be found in almost


every area of your earthly life
Everyone so that your needs are met. You
needs help can ask doctors for medicine,
at one time seek advice from a counselor,
or another. or crash at a friend’s house if
you need a place to stay.
Even though there are so many places to turn for help, when

it comes to your relationship with God there is no help on earth


to be found?
God clearly says in His Word (the Bible) that our only source
of help to restore our relationship with Him, and to save us from
a never ending life in hell, can be found in His Son, Jesus:

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only
Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal
life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the
world, but to save the world through Him.
John 3:16-17

SO, WHY DO “I” NEED HELP?

There are some seriously evil things taking place in the


world.

Do you agree?

Little children are killing each other, parents are


abandoning their responsibilities, drug use is escalating,
pornography is rampant, and the list goes on and on. The Bible
tells us that God did not intend for this world, His very own
creation, to be like this:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he


created him; male and female he created them.

If you’ve ever wondered why you are here, the Bible is a


great place to find that answer. It plainly tells us that God created
not only us, but all things. Not to just live, breathe, and wander,
but for an incredible love relationship with Him and with others.

Good is the opposite of evil.

When God created everything He made it good.

Good meaning perfect, no sickness, no hatred, no deception,


only perfection. Adam and Eve, the very first humans, were living
in a world without wickedness. God gave only one command to
Adam and Eve:

The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the
trees in the garden, but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from
the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch
it, or you will die.'"

The fact that God gave Adam a command reveals that he


and his wife, Eve, could make choices. God created mankind
with the ability and freedom to make their own decisions. At this
point Adam and Eve had a choice to make, freely obey or disobey
God’s very specific commandment. Read what they decided:

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for
food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom,
she took some and ate it. She also

gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

Adam and Eve clearly chose to disobey God’s only


command that we read of in Scripture up to this point, to not eat
from the tree in the middle of the garden.

will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." To Adam he
said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about
which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,' "Cursed is the
ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the
days of your life.

Through that one act of disobedience, mankind would


now have a sinful nature about them; meaning, every human is
born with the stain of sin upon their life and a desire to do wrong
lives within their heart:

conceived me.

Because of our sinful state every individual person is in


need of help restoring their relationship with God.

God, who is perfect, will not associate with sin.

Sin goes against His nature.

When a person responds to God by asking Him for help


it is because they have accepted that no one, including
themselves, besides Jesus can fix the dilemma of being separated
from God.

Accepting God’s help is a big deal.

Understanding God begins with receiving His help.

Our help is Jesus.

Understanding God begins with knowing Jesus.

ACCEPTANCE.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your
own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will
make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5-6

There is a point that most people have been at: God, if


You will do this… I promise to do this…

“God, if You fix my car I promise to never speed again.”

“God, if You will help me to find new friends I promise


to be a good influence.”

“God, if You help me to pass this test I promise to study


next time.”

“God, if You make a way for my girlfriend to not be


pregnant I promise to wait until I’m married to have sex.”

“God, if You help me get out of going to jail I promise to


straighten my life up.”
You can thread each of those situations together with the
word acceptance. Prayers like these reveal that a person has
accepted the fact that they are unable to change the outcome of
certain situations in their life. However, the “Let’s Make A Deal”
mentality normally is never the best approach when praying to
God. Rather, you should humble yourself and no matter the cost
be willing to admit, “I see Your ways are better than mine and I know
You can help my life, I want to live for You.”

What a great picture of our great need for God! We must


also continually be reminded that we are set free from our old
ways not because of anything that we have done or could ever
do.

It is through faith in what Jesus did for us that we


receive what God has always wanted and intended
to give us; His love and grace.

“We tend to say that because a person has natural ability, he
will make a good Christian. It is not a matter of our equipment,
but a matter of our poverty; not of what we bring with us, but of
what God puts into us; not a matter of virtues, or strength of
character, of knowledge, or of experience—all of that is of no avail
in this concern.”

It will never matter how good a person may think they are,
how little they think they have sinned, or even how many times
they go to church; what each person must accept and believe is
that apart from faith in Jesus there is nothing to offer God.
Nothing! No matter how much you do you can’t make it right
on your own.
This should be freeing but because it is human nature to
be controlling, we limit what God wants to do in our life. We
naturally like to be in control. Take driving in the car with at least
one other person for example. We like to be the one driving the
vehicle, we want the radio to be on our favorite station, and we
want to stop to eat only when we’re hungry, we don’t want to
pullover for a break until we are ready. Sometimes accepting the
fact that God’s ways are better can be a lot like allowing someone
else to be in control of the car.
As a Christian there will be times where it feels as if
everything is out of control when you hand the keys of your life

to God and ask Him to steer and direct your path. However,
when you trust God He will not disappoint. He knows what He
is doing and will not let you down.

9 If you haven’t already

Take a moment and look within your own life. Search

If you would like to begin a new life say this simple prayer
with your whole heart to God:

Dear God, I acknowledge my great need for You in my life. I


believe that Jesus, Your Son, came to this earth and lived, died,
and rose from the dead all for me so that my sins could be forgiven.
I want to give my whole life and heart to You. I want to turn away
from evil and follow You. Forgive me of my sins and please lead
my life. Amen.

2. Read your Bible every day. Take your time and think about
what it is saying. Start with the book of John.

3. Pray every day. Tell God what is going on in your life and ask
Him for help.

REPENTANCE.

Were you ever scolded by your parents or a teacher as a


little kid? In order to avoid the consequences of your actions, did
you ever say sorry solely for the sake of getting out of trouble? In
some cases it would work, they would have mercy. Seeing how
easy it could be to get out of trouble, immediately you would go
out and do the exact same thing that had just put you in the face
of discipline.

Why? Because it is acceptable in our culture to not take


responsibility for our actions.

As you grow closer to God by reading the Bible you will


discover a much different approach:

Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm, sealed with


this inscription: "The Lord knows those who are his," and,
"Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away
from wickedness."
2 Timothy 2:19
New International Version

That verse instructs us to turn away from wickedness. In


Greek, the original language of the New Testament, it uses the
word aphistemi2 (af-is'-taymee); which means to remove, to
revolt; or to desert. To revolt, desert, and remove. God is very
clear concerning the manner in which we deal with our
wrongdoing. What this is really saying is that if you are truly sorry
make a conscience decision to not do it again; stop fooling
around and get serious.

Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped
out, so that times of refreshing may come from the Lord…
Acts 3:19

Remember, repentance means to change your mind and


turn from sin. In other words, determine to get out of the
same patterns that you have been stuck in and decide to
turn toward God and His ways.
True repentance is more than words, it also involves the
condition of a person’s heart; a heart that is determined to turn

away from the very sin that they are saying sorry for committing.
Take comfort that not only does God see the repentant heart but
He honors it and forgives the person:

Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide


them. I said to myself, "I will confess my rebellion to the LORD."
And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.
Psalms 32:5

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us


our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Do you want more good news? Not only does God


forgive the repentant person but He also chooses to forget about
their sin:

If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?


But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared.
Psalms 130:3-4

“I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own


sake, and remembers your sins no more.

Because God does forget about confessed sins a believer


has the freedom to forget about them as well; even their most
shameful, regretted moments because they have repented of
them with a sincere heart. Isn’t that exciting? Don’t let the enemy
throw past sins in your face. God forgives and forgets about
confessed sin not because He couldn’t remember them but
because He chooses to. It is vital as a follower of God to

understand the power of repentance in order to walk in true


freedom.
Does the following scenario sound familiar? During a
church service you realize your need for God and respond to
Him by repeating a prayer. You meant every word and were
sincere about everything. A couple days go by and they have
been hard. You know you’ve done things that are not right and
you feel terrible about it. You attend church again and the pastor
gives another invitation to acknowledge Jesus as your Savior and
you feel the need to raise your hand again, even though you did
last week. Wrestling with the thought that there is no way God
has forgiven all of your new sins, you feel compelled to start all
over again. And you’re right in a way! God can’t forgive sins if
we don’t ask Him to. However, the Bible says if you confess your
sins He completely forgives them. Being repentant will free you
from thinking that you need to become a new Christian every
single week.
You don’t need to wait until you hear a powerful message
to repent; ask God to forgive you the moment you realize you
have sinned, the very second you begin struggling with guilt. Jesus
died so that you can live in freedom, not guilt. Don’t live buried
with the guilt of sin, give it to God and thank Him for His
forgiveness.

True freedom can be experienced but will require


two things: 1)Repentance of your sins and 2)Receiving His
forgiveness.

It’s one thing to acknowledge your sin, it’s another to truly


accept and believe that God forgives you. When you experience
this freedom you will naturally become more and more
dependent upon God. Dependent upon His forgiveness, His
love, His strength, everything that God is and offers!

DEPENDANCE.

Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.


He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not
be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my
mighty rock, my refuge.
Psalms 62:5-7
New International Version

One of the main goals of parenting is to prepare the child


to one day live an independent, successful life on their own, apart
from constant supervision and provision from the parents. An
age that some parents target for is eighteen. “When you’re eighteen
and out of our house you can do whatever you want!”
Most young people long for the day when they turn
eighteen almost as if they will become all knowing and ready for
anything that comes their way. They are ready to give life a try
on their own. The day that a person begins a relationship with
God is quite the opposite.

Don’t worry about weighing


God down or pulling on Him A successful relationship
too much. He is not waiting for with God will mean that
the day when you fly all on your every day you become
own and no longer need Him. closer and more
He wants you to be needy of dependent upon Him.

Not only does He desire for you to depend on Him but


He already knows all that you need, even before you make Him
“aware” of it.

God knows what you need at all times, in all places,


wherever you are. As a Christian one of the most important ways
that God meets your needs is through the Holy Spirit.
Before a person decides to follow God all they have to
depend upon is their own sinful nature. This a dark place to be,
following after whatever they desire and trusting that it is right,
even though in many circumstances doing so in the past led to
destruction and pain. However, when you declare Jesus as your
Savior, God places His Spirit within you:

If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives


in him and he in God.
1 John 4:15

Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that
God's Spirit lives in you?
1 Corinthians 3:16
New International Version

God places His Spirit inside of all Christians the moment they
receive Jesus as the Savior of their life.

What is Gods “Spirit”?

In order to understand God’s Spirit compare His Spirit to


your own. If you were to look at your own spirit at times you
would see jealousy, anger, lust, deceit, and hatred. The human
spirit is dead because of sin. While you may have moments of
honor your consistency to do good waivers, therefore making
you imperfect. However, God’s Spirit, which is contrary to ours,
is consistent and completely pure:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such
things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22-23

Why do we need the Holy Spirit?

God gives those who place their faith in Him His Spirit
out of love. We need His Spirit in order to live a God pleasing,
fulfilling life. His Spirit enables us to make necessary changes in
our life when need be. His Spirit empowers us to overcome
temptation, defeat addictions, move beyond setbacks, and to live
pure.

In other words, the Holy


Spirit is God’s powerful
presence that enables us
to do what He desires of
us.

When I consider the nature of God’s Spirit described


above in Galatians 5, and then compare it to the fruit of sinful
nature, I would much rather have God’s Spirit operating in my
life. Would you rather have stress than peace, or hate than love.
Does it make sense to desire recklessness instead of self-control,
or grief instead of joy?
As a Christian lives out their day to day life they will find
that their sinful nature is in conflict with God’s Spirit that He has
been placed within them:

For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and
the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict
with each other, so that you do not do what you want.
Galatians 5:17

Don’t be afraid or discouraged because of this though.


While there is a battle, you can be confident that you will win
through the power of God’s Spirit. If you learn to be dependent
upon the Holy Spirit rather than your old ways (which is your
sinful nature) you can expect your life to reflect the attributes and
character of God.
As your faith is encouraged and dependency upon God
grows you will learn to follow His ways rather than your own. A
Christian by no means has any excuse or reason to live
destructively once they have become a disciple. Look at the
following verse:

So, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation whatsoever


to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you keep on
following it, you will perish. But if through the power of the Holy
Spirit you turn from it and its evil deeds, you will live.
Romans 8:12-13

God’s Spirit removes the


controlling power of sinful desires.

The Holy Spirit provides the ability to say


no to things that at one time you were unable to.

Those who trust in Jesus Christ have an alternative to sin


and have the ability to follow after righteousness.
The conflict between your sinful nature and the Holy
Spirit is a constant battle; one you must never stop fighting as you
continually lean upon and trust the leading of God’s Spirit.
God does not want His people to feel disconnected or
helpless in the fight against sin, yet so often that is how the
Christian feels. As a result an attitude of independence can
develop toward the only One they are to depend upon on.

While dependency, in the world’s eye may seem like


weakness and inability, in light of a person’s relationship with
God it is their greatest strength and only hope.

Goals for part two:

1. Repent daily of the sins that you commit and don’t forget, God
forgives you!

2. Determine to follow after God’s Spirit and not your sinful


nature. Write down your victories in this area.

COMMITMENT.
Have you ever been committed to a cause or group? Is
there a band that you go to hear every time they are in your area?
Has there ever been a TV show that you liked so much that
everything else had to stop when it came on?
There are so many areas that we can become committed
to in our life; some can be good and some bad. We can be
committed to our families, a sports team, cigarettes, a
relationship, or even eating at a certain restaurant on a specific
day of the week.

Commitment takes a God is devoted to giving His


level of devotion and love to mankind. He made this
reveals what a person’s evident through His actions
true priorities are. towards this world and through
His Word, the Bible:

But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to
myself."
John 12:32
New International Version

Every day, if we took the time, we would realize evidence


of Gods commitment to us. He is always drawing us toward

Himself. He wants us to know Him and to be a part of what He


is doing on this earth. God has extended His hand toward every
person from the moment of our birth, just waiting for us to grab
hold and cling tightly to Him.

If you looked back on your life, how many situations could


you find where God was drawing you to Him?

I believe a lot.

The Lord does not delay and is not tardy or slow about what
He promises, according to some people's conception of slowness, but
He is longsuffering (extraordinarily patient) toward you, not
desiring that any should perish, but that all should turn to
repentance.

Consider for a moment that God has displayed great


patience toward you. He has lovingly waited for the joyous
moment of your acceptance and declaration of His son Jesus as
your Savior.

All whom My Father gives (entrusts) to Me will come to Me;


and the one who comes to Me I will most certainly not cast out [I
will never, no never, reject one of them who comes to Me].
John 6:37
Amplified Bible

God’s commitment to those who trust in Him is


unending, even extending into eternity. A Christian should never
be afraid of God disowning or forgetting about them. He is
faithfully committed to helping all who love Him live this life in
an honorable, God-fearing way.
This type of commitment cannot be measured against the
earthly human relationships that we experience. Even those we

love and who love us the most are capable of letting us down.
So how can you possibly understand and receive Gods
lifelong, unwavering, and stable commitment to you? You must
consider His Word and examine the circumstances within your
own life. Let me share an example from my own life:

My father died when I was young. This was obviously a


very hard thing for my family to go through. My father was our
family’s source of income and strength so when he died, my
mother had to quickly adapt to raising two boys all alone. She
also became the sole provider of income, sometimes working two
and three jobs at a time.
It took years to deal with the loss of my earthly father. I
tried many different ways to fill the void in my life where my
father was missing. But it wasn’t until I understood God’s Word
that I was able to receive healing and the void of my earthly father
was filled by the love and promises of my Heavenly Father.

The following verses illuminate truth that I experienced in


my own family and life:

A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his


holy dwelling.
Psalm 68:5
New International Version

The LORD watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless
and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.
Psalm 146:9
New International Version

Looking back on my life through the lens of God’s Word


I am able to see how He sustained my family with all that we
needed. God even provided men along the way who have
become like earthly father figures in my life. But it wasn’t until I
took the time to look at my life and the Bible to see God’s

unfailing commitment toward me. I bet you could do the same.


With such a deep level of commitment displayed towards
us how could we not display the same in response?
Unfortunately, many people choose to use God as a crutch,
running to Him only in times of trouble or heartache. As hard as
this may be to hear, that is not commitment but selfishness.
I love how my pastor once put it, going to the altar and
leaving without change didn’t do anything but make a mess on
the carpet.

Of course there are times where you make mistakes, but

True commitment is that which lasts until the very end.

What a disappointment it would be to witness a star


runner, conditioned to run to the very end, quit three quarters of
the way through. Do you realize, spiritually speaking, a child of
God is exactly that; fully equipped with all they need to live
victoriously on a daily basis, and to ultimately receive the prize of
eternal life the day they stand before God.

OBEDIENCE.

But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete
in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to
live in him must walk as Jesus did.
I John 2:5-6
New International Version

…Walk as Jesus did? When I think about the way Jesus


walked (the way He lived His life), every movement was based in
love. God’s perfect love which lives within Jesus resulted in
actions (or obedience) fueled by that love.
Obedience is always an action. Obedience obviously
comes from the word obey which means to follow the commands or
guidance of, to conform to, or comply with. 3
There are a number of reasons why a person will be
obedient to a command or advice. Take my son for example, as
a toddler he had to learn to eat foods that were good for him like
proteins and vegetables.
Teaching him to eat his vegetables required guiding him
through the process. He sometimes had a hard time
understanding the whole concept of this training, thus we
decided to incorporate rewards. He quickly realized that he could
receive candy, stickers, and even new toys when he followed our
instructions concerning eating the foods we gave him. However,
his obedience in this area did not come because he necessarily
liked the foods or to please his parents, but because he liked
candy and new toys.
The same could be said about the teenager who will strive
and work hard to get excellent grades because a new car is
promised as long as they reach the set goal. Their obedience is
driven by the reward of receiving a new car not necessarily
achieving good grades.

There are even more drastic examples like the abused wife
that will make sure dinner is fixed by the time her husband comes
home, not because she wants to please her husband, but because
she is afraid of the outcome if it is not the way he wants it. Her
actions are a result of fear not love.
Have you ever examined the motives of your obedience,
or lack thereof, to God. Do you serve God solely to get to
heaven? Are you afraid that if you mess up God is going to strike
you with a lightning rod? Do you give with motives to get? Do
you view your offering as a down payment on some kind of
future financial blessing? Or, are all of your actions, every one of
them, driven by love for God?
Jesus, time after time, displayed perfect love through His
actions and words. Consider the following two passages:

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who,


being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God
something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very
nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being
found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became
obedient to death-- even death on a cross!
Philippians 2:5-8

How did Jesus do it? How did He keep His motivation


for obedience pure? It is obvious that Jesus desired an alternative
to God’s plan of salvation. Wouldn’t you? Yet He still responded
in obedience. How?

He allowed the love of God the Father and


His love for God the Father to influence His decisions.

There are numerous situations that you could be faced


with that would cause you to prefer an alternative. There are
decisions to make every day that hinge upon obedience or
disobedience to God…

“God, I want to cheat on this exam; yet not my will,


but Yours.”

“God, my spouse doesn’t even care about me, why should


I show love to him? Yet, not my will but Yours.”

“God, my friends are getting high; yet not my will but


Yours.”

In moments like those, how should you respond? How can you
succeed? Like Jesus, you must allow the love of God, and your
love for God, to influence each decision that you make.

God’s Love For You:

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we


were still sinners, Christ died for us.

a powerful source to draw from in the moments where obedience
seems like a hard thing to choose.

Love For God:

But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those
who love your salvation always say, "Let God be exalted!"

Understanding what salvation means is exciting. It will


cause your love for God to grow. Let me use an illustration to
explain this: Do you remember the Christmas season as a child?
What a thrilling time! Think of the child who received everything
he had hoped for. Do you think the gifts he received influenced
his behavior? Let’s say his parents asked him to take the garbage
out after dinner. How would a boy who understands the
kindness displayed to him by his parents respond? He would take
the garbage out happily, remembering the gifts that were just
given to him hours before. The love, care, and thoughtfulness
from his parents affected his desire to please them.
While earthly, temporary gifts cannot compare to eternal,
heavenly salvation, you can see the point. Our love for God
because of what He has done will super-naturally spur us towards

As a Christian you may have dreams of becoming a pastor


of a large church, or gaining wealth to help further God’s
Kingdom. Maybe you have hopes of leading worship at large
conferences or on televised events. All of these desires are great!
But realize that all of your dreams for tomorrow begin shaping
with how you respond to opportunities today. If a person desires
to be a worship leader, God may first have them serve as a backup
singer within the children’s church ministry. If the young
Christian wants to open a home for unwed mothers someday,
God may first see if they are willing to help the lady down the
street who has kids and works two jobs today.
Obedience today is key to what God will entrust to
you tomorrow. A child of God is required to accurately reflect
who God is through obedience to His Word in their daily life…

Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set


your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is
revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires
you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you
is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because
I am holy."

inwardly believe. Remember though, actions or “works” cannot


buy admittance into heaven, only the grace of God can do that.
However, if a person says they have faith then their life should
reflect that.

You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by


faith alone.

If you think about it, doing good works just makes more
sense that doing evil. It is far more reasonable to treat people
with kindness rather than insult or injury. Obedience that God
expects from His children is really for their own sake and for the
good of others. It is better to love than hate, to give rather than
be selfish, and to encourage rather than tear down.
Obedience to God should be motivated by the love that
He places within you, not by fear or manipulation. God’s
potential and ability is limitless. However, God will only carry out
as much of His plan within your life as you allow. More of His
love and blessings will be unveiled with each moment of
surrender and obedience that you display within your life.

REACHING OUT.
Quite often when a person decides to become a Christian
there will be friends, peers, and family members who are
surprised or confused about their new decision and behavior.
There may be ridicule, broken friendships, or a lot of questions
to face because of their relationship with Jesus. How does a
Christian work through all of that in order to accurately and
openly share their hope and faith with others? After all, a child of
God is commanded to share their faith:

He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good
news to all creation.
Mark 16:15

Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven


and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples
of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit…

The message of Christ was never intended to remain


within the four walls of a church building. Pastors and Sunday
school teachers are not the only ones “licensed” to tell someone

about God. Every person who has ever declared Jesus as their
Savior has a God given mandate to share who He is. Every
Christian has an amazing opportunity to help further spread
God’s message and love. How exciting to get to share with others
the same love that has impacted you?

Why does sharing your faith even matter?

A Christian must always remember that there is a soul


within every living person, a soul that will reap either eternal
regret or reward. There will always be someone who is in the
same lost state that they once were in.
According to God’s Word you will either spend eternity
with Him or with your enemy the devil:

Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your


calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never
fall, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom
of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
2 Peter 1:10-11

The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed
out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil.
They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be
weeping and gnashing of teeth.

reality is God is fair and just. He gives all people the opportunity
to know Him and extends the gift of salvation to all mankind.
Remember, God has given every person a freewill to choose and

There are many people who choose to live how they want
to. God will never force anyone to serve Him. He will never bully
His way into anyone’s heart. But, He will extend His love to them
and give them many chances to begin a relationship with Him.
Most often, that is where a child of God comes in.

When someone falls and is

one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

Doing simple, small acts of kindness in the world that we


live in today will usually leave people bewildered and shocked.

An example:
A while back I was at a store using a shopping cart
like most people do. When I had finished putting the
items that I had purchased into my vehicle I proceeded
to put my cart into the “Cart Corral”. A very simple,
expected action after someone uses one of the carts. As
I was walking back to my truck, the cart attendant
flagged me down and approached me exclaiming how
much she appreciated the fact that I put my cart back
where it was supposed to go.

The importance of this simple example is that often when


you share and live out the “fruit of the Spirit” in the presence
of others, it will open a spiritual door to vocally share the reason
behind your actions.
The need for displaying God’s character and love has
never been greater.

When you think about the condition that our world is in, what
words come to your mind?

Selfishness…
Greedy…
Broken…
Anger…
Confused…?

God’s Word warns us about the condition of people and


instructs how a Christian should respond:

In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the
living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom,
I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and
out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-- with great patience
and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not
put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they

will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what


their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from
the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all
situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge
all the duties of your ministry.

God instructs us to be ready, to not give up, to love each other,
and to share the truth of who He is!

How Can A Christian Share Their Faith?

Another way to share your faith is by simply relating your


life to the person you are talking with and incorporating into the
conversation how Jesus has changed your life.

Their Story, His Story, Your Story

Have you ever heard the phrase, “They will never care how
much you know until they know how much you care”? Any time that
someone shares the gospel they must be sure that their motives
are correct and that they are doing so in love.
One of the best ways to let someone know that you care
about them is by simply listening. Let them do the talking. Find
out where they are in their life. Let them tell you what they
believe, how they feel, and what they’ve been through. This is
essentially, Their Story. Most often, you can find a meeting
ground between their story and your own personal testimony.
Maybe you’ve felt the way that they have or possibly you have
gone through a similar situation. People will listen to you when
you’ve given them the same respect. In love you can share what
the Bible says about who Jesus is and why He came to the earth.
This is His Story. The Bible tells that Jesus came so that every
person can have the opportunity to experience God’s love and
freedom (John 3:16).
Next you can share how having a relationship with God
through Jesus Christ has changed your life. This is Your Story.
Relate their experience to the love of Christ and how He
is willing to save them just like He did you. Boldly share of the
promises that can only be found in Jesus Christ, God’s one and
only Son.
After leading someone to the Lord, invite them to church
or encourage them to find a good one to attend. Help them get
a Bible and to find resources (like this book) so they can further
understand their relationship with God.
There is nothing more satisfying than knowing that you
are able to be a part of affecting another person’s eternity for the
good. The hope of Jesus is not exclusive but is meant to be shared

with everyone.

ENJOYING LIFE.
Consider the example set
The Bible does not promise by some of the greatest
that life will be easy, not even men of God who ever
after you become a Christian. walked the planet. One
being the Apostle Paul:

Are they servants of Christ? (I am out of my mind to talk like


this.) I am more. I have worked much harder, been in prison more
frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death
again and again. Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes
minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned,
three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the
open sea, I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger
from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my own
countrymen, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in
danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false
brothers. I have labored and toiled and have often gone without
sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without
food; I have been cold and naked. Besides everything else, I face
daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.
2 Corinthians 11:23-28

According to this passage it doesn’t sound like an easy life


to me! The suffering most Christians face today cannot compare
to the persecutions of the Apostle Paul and the other early
disciples of the faith. Yet if you read other verses written by Paul,
his words describe comfort, joy, and peace which rested within
his life. How could that have been possible? Here is another
passage written by Paul detailing the ups and downs of his life:
I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have
plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every
situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in

want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength.


Philippians 4:12-13

So often when we face trial and trouble we turn to what


is familiar. What we have always known. But if we would only
allow Jesus to be all that we need, everything else would easily fall
into perspective. When we rest in the promises of the Bible it is
possible for sorrow to become joy, defeat to become victory, and
loss to become gain.

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of


many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith
develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that
you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
James 1:2-4

Trouble and hardship become


opportunities to allow God to be God.

With each test your faith will be strengthened


as you put your trust completely in God.

Over time, you will find struggles that at one time were a
mountain in your life are now nothing more than a bump in the
road. The drugs that used to call your name now make you sick
to even think about. The thought of pornography now drops you
to your knees in prayer asking God to set those who are still
trapped free. The anger that burned within you uncontrollably is

now controlled and disappearing. The thoughts that held you


captive in fear are now being captured, no longer ruling you, but
being made obedient to the Word of God. What is taking place?
Perseverance is having its perfecting work within you. Those
who surrender their life to God become fighters and champions
for Him. Overcomers! Christians are not quitters but finishers,
able to press on toward the prize!

For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and


the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I
have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
2 Timothy 4:6-7

When it is time to leave this earth, to die, the follower of


God will be able to look back on a life that God was faithful to.
His Word remained true. His promises were fulfilled. His love
endured all things.

For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his
faithfulness continues through all generations.
Psalms 100:5

There is overflowing joy to be found within the new life


that God offers through His Son, Jesus Christ, a life of promise
and hope; a life that looks forwards to a heavenly home with a
heavenly Father who loves them.

Experiencing salvation is the most joyful


thing a person can experience.

Trust God, He will see you through.

There are a few things that I hope you will participate in.

Water Baptism

Water baptism is the outward, physical symbol of an


inward spiritual experience, representing the salvation God
provided through His Son, Jesus Christ, in His death, burial, and
resurrection. The Bible teaches that, “by grace you were saved through
faith” (Eph. 2:8). Therefore, it is Jesus who has washed away all
of our sins; He alone is our salvation once we have made Him
our Lord and Savior. It is through water baptism that a believer
shows that they are His follower, His disciple.
Think of the picture you are painting through water
baptism. As you go down under the water you are symbolically
showing that you are dying to your old self just as Jesus died for
you. As you come up out of the water, you are showing that just
as Jesus rose again, you also now walk in newness of life.

Water baptism is important for a few reasons:


1. Jesus commanded that believers be baptized.
Matthew 28:18-19
2. Jesus set the example by being baptized.
Matthew 3:13-15
3. To testify of your salvation.
Galatians 2:20

Finding A Church

The importance of finding a good church where you can


connect with other Christians, learn and study the Bible, and
worship God cannot be over overemphasized. Simply put, you
need to be in church, not out of religious duty but because the
local church serves as a way for the Body of Christ to minister to
one another and to this world.

Here are a few basic things to consider when choosing a church


home:

1. Is the gospel of Jesus Christ being taught?


2. Does the church teach that the Bible is the inspired Word of
God?
3. Is the church a place of fellowship and community?
4. Does the church body carry a burden to share the gospel with
the outside community?
