UNDERSTANDING GOD
1 RECEIVING GOD
HELP.
I love God because he listened to me, listened as I
begged for mercy. He listened so intently as I laid out my case before
him. Death stared me in the face, hell was hard on my heels. Up
against it, I didn't know which way to turn; then I called out to
God for help: "Please, God!" I cried out. "Save my life!" God is
gracious—it is he who makes things right, our most compassionate
God. God takes the side of the helpless; when I was at the end of
my rope, he saved me.
Psalms 116:1-6
The Message
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only
Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal
life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the
world, but to save the world through Him.
John 3:16-17
New International Version
Do you agree?

UNDERSTANDING GOD
God saw all that he had made, and it was very good…
Genesis 1:31
New International Version
The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the
trees in the garden, but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from
the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch
it, or you will die.'"
Genesis 3:2-3
New International Version
When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for
food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom,
she took some and ate it. She also

gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

UNDERSTANDING GOD
It will never matter how good a person may think they are,
how little they think they have sinned, or even how many times
they go to church; what each person must accept and believe is
that apart from faith in Jesus there is nothing to offer God.
Nothing! No matter how much you do you can’t make it right
on your own.
This should be freeing but because it is human nature to
be controlling, we limit what God wants to do in our life. We
naturally like to be in control. Take driving in the car with at least
one other person for example. We like to be the one driving the
vehicle, we want the radio to be on our favorite station, and we
want to stop to eat only when we’re hungry, we don’t want to
pullover for a break until we are ready. Sometimes accepting the
fact that God’s ways are better can be a lot like allowing someone
else to be in control of the car.
As a Christian there will be times where it feels as if
everything is out of control when you hand the keys of your life
7
RECEIVING GOD
to God and ask Him to steer and direct your path. However,
when you trust God He will not disappoint. He knows what He
is doing and will not let you down.
If you would like to begin a new life say this simple prayer
with your whole heart to God:
8
UNDERSTANDING GOD
2. Read your Bible every day. Take your time and think about
what it is saying. Start with the book of John.
3. Pray every day. Tell God what is going on in your life and ask
Him for help.

REPENTANCE.

Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that
God's Spirit lives in you?
1 Corinthians 3:16
New International Version
God places His Spirit inside of all Christians the moment they
receive Jesus as the Savior of their life.
15
NEEDING GOD
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such
things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22-23
New International Version
God gives those who place their faith in Him His Spirit
out of love. We need His Spirit in order to live a God pleasing,
fulfilling life. His Spirit enables us to make necessary changes in
our life when need be. His Spirit empowers us to overcome
temptation, defeat addictions, move beyond setbacks, and to live
pure.
For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and
the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict
with each other, so that you do not do what you want.
Galatians 5:17

COMMITMENT.
Have you ever been committed to a cause or group? Is
there a band that you go to hear every time they are in your area?
Has there ever been a TV show that you liked so much that
everything else had to stop when it came on?
There are so many areas that we can become committed
to in our life; some can be good and some bad. We can be
committed to our families, a sports team, cigarettes, a
relationship, or even eating at a certain restaurant on a specific
day of the week.
But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to
myself."
John 12:32
New International Version
I believe a lot.
The Lord does not delay and is not tardy or slow about what
He promises, according to some people's conception of slowness, but
He is longsuffering (extraordinarily patient) toward you, not
desiring that any should perish, but that all should turn to
repentance.

love and who love us the most are capable of letting us down.
So how can you possibly understand and receive Gods
lifelong, unwavering, and stable commitment to you? You must
consider His Word and examine the circumstances within your
own life. Let me share an example from my own life:
The LORD watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless
and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

TRUSTING GOD
There are even more drastic examples like the abused wife
that will make sure dinner is fixed by the time her husband comes
home, not because she wants to please her husband, but because
she is afraid of the outcome if it is not the way he wants it. Her
actions are a result of fear not love.
Have you ever examined the motives of your obedience,
or lack thereof, to God. Do you serve God solely to get to
heaven? Are you afraid that if you mess up God is going to strike
you with a lightning rod? Do you give with motives to get? Do
you view your offering as a down payment on some kind of
future financial blessing? Or, are all of your actions, every one of
them, driven by love for God?
Jesus, time after time, displayed perfect love through His
actions and words. Consider the following two passages:
"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my
will, but yours be done."
Luke 22:42
New International Version
24

In moments like those, how should you respond? How can you
succeed? Like Jesus, you must allow the love of God, and your
love for God, to influence each decision that you make.
Even in your

obedience.
As the believer responds in obedience in each area of their
life God will entrust more responsibility to that person as they
display that they are trustworthy…
27
TRUSTING GOD
If you think about it, doing good works just makes more
sense that doing evil. It is far more reasonable to treat people
with kindness rather than insult or injury. Obedience that God
expects from His children is really for their own sake and for the
good of others. It is better to love than hate, to give rather than
be selfish, and to encourage rather than tear down.
Obedience to God should be motivated by the love that
He places within you, not by fear or manipulation. God’s
potential and ability is limitless. However, God will only carry out
as much of His plan within your life as you allow. More of His
love and blessings will be unveiled with each moment of
surrender and obedience that you display within your life.

4 SHARING GOD
REACHING OUT.
Quite often when a person decides to become a Christian
there will be friends, peers, and family members who are
surprised or confused about their new decision and behavior.
There may be ridicule, broken friendships, or a lot of questions
to face because of their relationship with Jesus. How does a
Christian work through all of that in order to accurately and
openly share their hope and faith with others? After all, a child of
God is commanded to share their faith:
He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good
news to all creation.
Mark 16:15
New International Version
about God. Every person who has ever declared Jesus as their
Savior has a God given mandate to share who He is. Every
Christian has an amazing opportunity to help further spread
God’s message and love. How exciting to get to share with others
the same love that has impacted you?
The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed
out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil.
They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be
weeping and gnashing of teeth.

SHARING GOD
An example:
A while back I was at a store using a shopping cart
like most people do. When I had finished putting the
items that I had purchased into my vehicle I proceeded
to put my cart into the “Cart Corral”. A very simple,
expected action after someone uses one of the carts. As
I was walking back to my truck, the cart attendant
flagged me down and approached me exclaiming how
much she appreciated the fact that I put my cart back
where it was supposed to go.
When you think about the condition that our world is in, what
words come to your mind?
Selfishness…
Greedy…
Broken…
Anger…
Confused…?
In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the
living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom,
I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and
out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-- with great patience
and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not
put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe

UNDERSTANDING GOD
Have you ever heard the phrase, “They will never care how
much you know until they know how much you care”? Any time that
someone shares the gospel they must be sure that their motives
are correct and that they are doing so in love.
One of the best ways to let someone know that you care
about them is by simply listening. Let them do the talking. Find
out where they are in their life. Let them tell you what they
believe, how they feel, and what they’ve been through. This is
essentially, Their Story. Most often, you can find a meeting
ground between their story and your own personal testimony.
Maybe you’ve felt the way that they have or possibly you have
gone through a similar situation. People will listen to you when
you’ve given them the same respect. In love you can share what
the Bible says about who Jesus is and why He came to the earth.
This is His Story. The Bible tells that Jesus came so that every
person can have the opportunity to experience God’s love and
freedom (John 3:16).
Next you can share how having a relationship with God
through Jesus Christ has changed your life. This is Your Story.
Relate their experience to the love of Christ and how He
is willing to save them just like He did you. Boldly share of the
promises that can only be found in Jesus Christ, God’s one and
only Son.
After leading someone to the Lord, invite them to church
or encourage them to find a good one to attend. Help them get
a Bible and to find resources (like this book) so they can further
understand their relationship with God.
There is nothing more satisfying than knowing that you
are able to be a part of affecting another person’s eternity for the
good. The hope of Jesus is not exclusive but is meant to be shared
