Activity 13 - Ecology and geography

Ariela Rozanes - Group 604

Part 1 (Ariela) Individually write a reflection about environmental pollution that respond, as
paragraphs, the next questions:

1. What is happening at a global level?

Because there is overpopulation around the world, we produce more garbage and
contamination. That affects the air, climate change, global warming, etc… In the video, they
showed how terrible the ocean is now. It is full of garbage and that affects us a lot. If we
don´t change that, instead of getting fish we are only going to eat plastic.

2. What would happen if these problems got worse?

One of the things that can happen if we don't control the air pollution, is that in 2030 the air
will become poisonous and it is going to be necessary to use an oxygen kit for breathing.
And I mentioned in the question before that there will be more plastic left in the ocean than
fish. Our health is also going to be affected obviously… Heart diseases, lung cancer,
respiratory diseases, etc.

3. What should we do to solve the climate change problem?

I think we can all change with little actions, but it is something we all need to commit to,
because if only 3 people in this world change it’s not gonna help at all. You can drive less
and use more public transport or bicycle, turn off the water when you brush your teeth or
when you put shampoo or soap in the shower, reuse plastic, separate your garbage, plant a
tree, etc.

4. What did you learn?

In the video they mentioned that there is a program that has a program where they have a
machine for turning plastic into gas and then to oil and wax.

Part 2 (Ariela and Gibrán) - 5 interviews

We interviewed 3 classmates, one security guard and our French teacher Clem. These are
the answers, we asked them the questions below and we also noticed some answers were
similar!

1. What is the type of waste generated?

Organic and inorganic waste, plastics, bags, oil, and a lot of other things.

2. How much of that garbage is generated at each place?

Like 3 people out of the 5 five told us they generate more garbage and waste at their house
than in school. Some of them bring their own food and so they don’t use the plastic or wraps
that the cafeteria uses, stuff like that. But other people generate more garbage and waste
here, for example, candy or chips bags, plastic, bottles, etc.

3. Which are the affections of that waste for the air, water and soil?
In general, the soil (“ground”) is more affected. But we came to the conclusion that the 3
sections get affected (air, water and soil).

4. How is the trash management in your community and your state? Is there any
sanitary landfill?
Some of the interviewed people told us they compost with the organic waste from fruits and
vegetables, and they also follow the PET system for recycling and throwing away plastic
bottles. In Tecmilenio we have trash cans for organic and inorganic waste, which means we
all separate our school garbage production. I think that is really good because some people
don't do these things at their house, and doing it in school actually helps the Earth a little bit.
The French teacher said that what we do in school is pretty good, but we could do more
things.

5. What can you do at school and home to reduce or eliminate the consumption
of products to decrease the garbage generation?
Reuse plastics, and instead of using Ziploc bags or aluminum foil for a sandwich for
example, bring a tupper.
