METHOD OF STATEMENT

HORIZONTAL DIRECTIONAL DRILLING (HDD)

1.0 Introduction

i. This method of statement describes a proposed design to be carried out during

implementation of civil infrastructure by HDD method. The HDD method is intended
for the installation of steel pipe and HDPE duct to act as cable ductway. In this proposed
method, steel pipe will act as casing duct while HDPE duct will act as cable ducting.

ii. Major ducts installation proposed in this method of statement:

a) Installation of casing pipe in a configuration of 2-way steel pipe, diameter 12-inch

(305 mm) by HDD method.

b) Installation of product pipe (it can be referred also as secondary duct or cable duct)
in a configuration of 2-way HDPE, diameter 8-inch (203 mm) by HDD method.

iii) To ensure safety of existing underground infrastructure, an adequate information with

regards to the proposed alignment to be obtained by Utility Detection Mapping (UDM)
on standard width of the proposed route. This is to ensure any existing utilities beneath
can be detected and work to be carried out with precaution.

5.0 HDD Work Procedure

i) HDD method comprises of three stages:

a) Pilot hole drilling

b) Pre-reaming
c) Pipe & cable pulling

ii) Pilot hole drilling:

a) The first stage consists of drilling a small diameter pilot hole. Drilling fluid is
pumped through the drill pipe to the drill bit where high-pressure jets and the bit
will grind the soils ahead of the drill stem. The drilling fluid will also carry the
cuttings back to the entrance pit at the drill rig. Tracking of the pilot hole can be
done in several ways depending on the size and complexity of the shot. Smaller
shots are done using a walkover guidance system whereas the larger more complex
shots have a wire line type system. With both methods there is a transmitter or
steering tool located near the drill head which sends a signal to the location engineer
giving the exact coordinates of the drill stem. Readings are constantly taken which
check the depth, alignment and percent slope of the drill head.

iii) Pre-reaming:

a) The second step is to pre-ream the pilot hole and enlarge it to a size sufficient to
safely install the product lines. A reamer is pulled back and rotated while pumping
drilling fluid to cut and remove solids to enlarge the hole. Pre-reaming speeds will
vary depending on existing soil conditions and the number of cuttings that are
removed from the hole.

Reamer size sequence is as below:

Reaming sequence 1: 10-inch (cutter)

Reaming sequence 2: 16-inch (cutter)
Reaming sequence 3: 20-inch (compact)
Reaming sequence 4: 24-inch (cutter)
Reaming sequence 5: 24-inch (compact) – drill bore hole cleaning

b) Bentonite and other additives will be used to ensure a clean and stable hole.
Bentonite is used to create a layer around the outside of the hole during pre-
reaming. This will help with the stability of the bore hole and with fluid loss or
infiltration. Additives such as polymers are used to help break up the clay soils. A
more evenly mixed drilling fluid will prevent any blockages inside of the bore hole.

Illustration 2: Pre-reaming process

iv) Pipe pulling:

a) The final step is the pullback of the pipe within the pre-reamed hole. The drill rod
and reamer will be attached to a swivel, which is utilized between the product line
and the reamer to prevent any torsional stress from the rotating drill string being
transferred to the product pipe. As the product pipe is pulled into the drill hole,
drilling fluid is pumped downhole to provide lubrication to the product pipe.

b) During pullback process, 24-inch (compact) reamer will be used.

Illustration 3: Pullback process / pipe pulling works

v) After casing pipe installation completed, secondary duct / cable duct (HDPE) will be pulled
through in the casing pipe. HDPE duct will act as cable ductway.

6.0 HDD Gyroscopic Mapping

i) After casing pipe have been pulled through, the alignment and depth of the HDD
will be checked by gyroscopic mapping. This is to check that the alignment and
depth of HDD is as per desired HDD profile.

ii) Gyroscopic mapping provides XYZ data and provide accurate measurement of the
bend radius or inclination along a segment of a pipe or duct.

7.0 Cable Pulling via HDPE duct

i) Cable pulling process through HDPE ductway will be executed by using a cable
winch.

ii) Prior to cable pulling works, messenger rope will be installed through the HDPE
duct.
