RAY OPTICS AND OPTICAL INSTRUMENTS

1. A concave mirror produces a real and magnified image of an object kept in front of it.
Draw a ray diagram to show the mage formation and use it to derive the mirror equation.
2. Derive the lens equation.
3. Draw a ray diagram showing the geometry of formation of image of a point object
situated on the principal axis and on the convex side of a spherical surface of radius of
curvature R. Taking the rays as incident from rarer medium of refractive index 𝑛1 to a
denser medium of refractive index 𝑛2 , derive the relation , where symbols have their
usual meaning.

4. The refractive index of a material of a concave lens is 𝑛1 .it is immersed in a medium
of refractive index 𝑛2 . Parallel rays of light are incident on the lens. Complete the path
of ray of light emerging from the concave lens if (i) 𝑛1 > 𝑛2 (ii) 𝑛1 = 𝑛2 (iii) 𝑛1 < 𝑛2 .
5. (a) Derive lens maker’s formula for a biconvex lens. Also state the assumptions in
deriving the above relation and the sign conventions used.
(b) A convex lens made up of glass of refractive index 1.5 is dipped, in turn, in:(i)
Medium A of refractive index 1.65 (ii) Medium B of refractive index 1.33.
Explain giving reasons, whether it will behave as a converging lens or a diverging
lens in each of these two media.
6. (a) Name the phenomenon on which the working of an optical fibre is based.
(b) What are the necessary conditions for this phenomenon to occur?
(c) Draw a labelled diagram of an optical fibre and show how light propagates through
the optical fibre using this phenomenon.
7. (i) Draw a schematic diagram of a reflecting telescope. State the advantages of
reflecting telescope over refracting telescope.
(ii) What is its magnifying power ?
8.
(i) Draw a labelled ray diagram to show the image formation by an astronomical
telescope in normal adjustment.
(ii) Define magnifying power of an astronomical telescope in normal adjustment (i,e,
when the final image is formed at infinity).
(iii) Derive the expression for its magnifying power in normal adjustment.
9.
(i) Draw a labelled ray diagram of an astronomical telescope when the final image is
formed at least distance of distinct vision.
(ii) Define its magnifying power and deduce the expression for the magnifying power
of telescope.
10. Draw a labelled ray diagram of a compound microscope when image is formed at least
distance of distinct vision. Define its magnifying power and deduce the expression for
the magnifying power of the microscope.
11. (i) Draw a labelled ray diagram for the formation of image by a compound microscope
in normal adjustment.
(ii) Define magnifying power of a compound microscope in normal adjustment and
derive an expression for it.
