9.1.1 Introduction
The linear functionals f : V → F (R/C). The dual space V ∗ is like a shadow space of the original space V . In
finite dimensional cases, they are isomorphic, which means there is a bijection f , and f preserves addition and scalar
multiplication,
f (ax + by) = af (x) + bf (y), ∀f ∈ V ∗ , ∀a, b ∈ F, ∀x, y ∈ V. (9.1)
Namely, it does not matter you do the linear operations first and then the transformation, or vice versa.
The proof can be found here: Proof. Notice that even though it is true in the finite-dimensional case, it is not valid
in infinite-dimensional cases, where the dual space is generally larger than the original vector space.

9.1.2 Dual Basis: video

This concept is crucial in showing the isomorphism between V and V ∗ under finite dimensions. Suppose V is finite-
dimensional and there is a basis for V , {v1 , v2 , ..., vN }. Also assume f is a linear transformation f : V → F , so
f ∈ V ∗ . Since f is a linear transformation, it is enough to determine f by only its behaviors on the basis vectors.
This is by the linear extension theorem (If you know what f does on the basis vectors, you know what it does on
every vector.).
