SPLIT TESTS
Get your open rates up, and you could instantly see a boost in conversions
without needing to do much of anything else – cool huh?
The average email open rate across all industries is around 21%.
Here at the Copy Posse, our open rates are around 25-50% – pretty good… But
we’re always looking to improve, optimize, and outperform ourselves.
So, over the last year, we ran TONS of split tests on our subject lines…
Below, you’ll find a list of the subject lines we split-tested (the yellow
highlight signifies the winner), along with the open rate for each email.
We’ve also included key takeaways and tips that you can immediately apply
to your own subject lines to boost open rates and drive more engagement…
Finally, I’ll share how you can make your subject lines EXTRA clicky so you
can boost your open rates instantly.

This story 😭 It's you, NAME. 34.0% This email was sent to a

open rate is higher.
Use your brand voice. You can see that snarky, snappy, playful and
sarcastic subject lines are our bread and butter 😊 This is very “on brand”
for the Copy Posse, which is why these subject lines perform well for us!
Be honest and vulnerable. We all want to feel like other people “get” us.
By sharing something vulnerable about YOU, your audience will feel like
you get them.
Keep it short. Short, punchy subject lines (5-7 words) often perform well.
But longer, more descriptive ones can also be effective – depending on
the context.
Tip: When I want to use long + descriptive phrases, I put the first part
in the subject line and the second part in the preview/meta text to
avoid the words being cut off.
Use Numbers. Subject lines with numbers pop out more and imply
valuable content. Including numbers in subject lines results can result in
57% higher open rates.
Include Power Words. Use compelling words that grab attention and
make your subject lines more enticing.
Pro tip: I have a whole list of Power Words you can grab for free here.
Use Emojis (but not too much). Emojis are a great way to help your email
stand out in the inbox. 56% of brands who use emojis in their email
subject lines have higher open rates.
Tip: Keep the emojis to a minimum. One or two at most and not in
every single email.
Play around with these tips in your subject lines, track what works best for
YOU, and remember to always test, tweak, and optimize!
Your subject line alone (no matter how brilliant or catchy) won’t close the
sale or create the conversion…
For that, you need to zoom out and take a better look at your entire email
marketing strategy.
