Introduction to 3D Modeling

Assignment_01.1: buildingBlocks
_project | description.
In this project learners will assemble constructions with building blocks (akin to Froeble and/or
Doug & Melissa blocks.) Using basic solid modeling tools users first create a set of blocks from a
given set of dimensions. Focusing on the terms repetition, pattern, and open/closed learners should
construct 3 different designs using 200 or more blocks in each version. With each design explore a
different ‘procedural logic’ as described in the video and demonstrated in the set of diagrams
below. Learners will learn basic image output to produce images (pdfs) of their creations and upload
them to the Gallery Tool.

_steps. [Articulated in detail in the video (1.2 Building Block Model: Example)]
1. In the ‘File’ pull-down menu create a ‘New’ Rhino file using the ‘Small Objects – Millimeters’
template.
2. Make sure ‘Grid Snap’ and ‘Gumball’ are on (bold) – lower part of interface.
3. On the cPlane using the ‘Solid Creation’ ‘Box’ tool create your building blocks. Note: You will
only need to create one of each – as you can reproduce them through copying.
4. Blocks should always be in units of 10 mm with a 10 x 10 base. Make blocks that are (width x
depth x height): 10 x 10 x 10, 10 x 10 x 20, 10 x 10 x 30, 10 x 10 x 40.
5. You can also make: Cone, Truncated Cone, Pyramid, and Truncated Pyramid with bases that
fit within the 10 x 10 limit.
6. Use your selection tool to select the blocks you want to manipulate.
7. After selecting use the Gumball to Move | Rotate | Copy (Alt Key) your blocks.
8. Build 3 separate constructions of at least 200 blocks each. (You can find out how many
blocks a construction has by selecting them and looking at the command line.)
9. In the ‘File’ pull-down menu use ‘ Print’ to output views of your constructions as PDFs.
Compile into a single PDF for uploading to Gallery site.

_reference | videos | online pdf.

− 1.2 Building Block Model: Example (video)
− Assignment_1.1 Models (file) - a Rhinoceros file that contains a collection of the correctly
dimensioned building blocks users will need and a series of example constructions. Users can
use this to help them create their collection accurately.
− online pdf reference (from McNeel site)

_deliverables.
A single pdf of compiled images of the 3 constructions uploaded to the Gallery Site.
