(iii) We know that if a perpendicular is drawn from the vertex of the right angle of a right triangle to the hypotenuse, the
triangles on each side of perpendicular are similar to the whole triangle and to each other.
∴ ∆BMD ~ ∆DMC ... (I)
and ∆BND ~ ∆DNA  ... (II)
DM MC
From (I) we have, =
BM DM
⇒ DM2 = BM × MC ... (III)
DN AN
From (II) we have, =
BN DN

⇒ DN2 = BN × AN ... (IV)
In ∆BDM and ∆DBN, we have
∠BMD = ∠DNB [Each = 90°]
∠MBD = ∠NDB [Alternate angles]
BD = DB [Common]
∴ ∆BDM ≅ ∆DBN    [ASA]
⇒ BM = DN and DM = BN [CPCT]
Substituting these values in (III) and (IV), we get
DM2 = DN × MC and DN2 = DM × AN Proved
Question 10 :
(i) A motorboat whose speed is 15 km/h in still water goes 36 km upstream and comes back to the starting point in
5 hours. Find the speed of the stream. [3]
3 x + 9 x2 − 5
(ii) Solve for x, using the properties of proportion: =5 [3]
3x - 9x2 − 5

(iii) Draw a line segment AB = 10 cm. Mark C, the mid-point of AB. Draw and describe the locus of a point which is
(i) 2 cm from AB (ii) 4 cm from C. Mark the points E, F, G, H which satisfy both the above conditions. [4]
(a) Describe the figure EFGH. (b) What kind of triangle is ECF?
Solution :
(i) Let the speed of the stream = x km/h from question
36 36
+ =5
15 – x 15 + x
15 + x + 15 – x 5 30 5 30 × 36
⇒ = ⇒ = ⇒ 225 – x2 = = 216 ⇒ 9 = x2 ⇒ x = 3 km/h (x ≠ –3)
225 – x2 36 225 – x2 36 5
\ speed of the stream = 3 km/h

3x + 9 x 2 − 5

(ii) We have, = =5
3x − 9 x 2 − 5

3x 9 x 2 5 3x 9 x 2 5 5 1

      [Applying componendo and dividendo]
2
3x 9 x 5 3x 9 x 52 5 1
6x 6 2 2
⇒ = 9 x 2 − 5 = 2x ⇒ 9x – 5 = 4x
2
2 9x 5 4
⇒ 5x2 = 5 ⇒ x2 = 1 ⇒ x = ±1
⇒ x = 1 [Rejecting x = –1, as it does not satisfy the given equation] Ans.
(iii) (i) Construct PQ and RS lines parallel to AB ast a 2 m from AB.
(ii) Taking C as the centre and 4 cm as radius construct areas which interect PQ at
P E F Q
E and F and RS at G and H.
Now join EG and FH.
(a) Hence, EFGH is a rectangle A C B

(b) Triangle ECF is an isosceles triangle. As E and F lies on the perimeter of the
R H G S
circle with centre C.
