SUBJECT: PHYSICS Time: 3 hours

General Instructions
(i) There are 33 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
(ii) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D, and
Section E.
(iii) All the sections are compulsory.
(iv) Section A contains sixteen questions, twelve MCQ and four Assertion Reasoning based
questions of 1 mark each, Section B contains five questions of two marks each, Section C
contains seven questions of three marks each, Section D contains two case study-based
questions of four marks each and Section E contains three long answer questions of five
marks each.
(v) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one
question in Section B, one question in Section C, one question each in CBQ in Section D
and all three questions in Section E. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such
questions.
(vi) Use of calculators is not allowed.

19 A body of mass 50 g is revolving about an axis in a circular path. The distance of 2
the centre of mass of the body from the axis of rotation is 50 cm. Find the moment
of inertia of the body.

20 Identify the position of Sun in the given diagram if the linear speed of the planet is 2
greater at C compared to that at D. Give reason for your answer.

21 Give reason: (i) Steel is more elastic than rubber. 2


(ii) Gases have large compressibility.

SECTION C
22 A body starts from rest at time t=0, the acceleration- time graph of which is as
shown in the figure given below:

(a)Find the velocity of the body from (i) t=0 to t=10 sec
(ii) t= 10 to t= 20 sec

(b)Draw a velocity time graph for the motion of the body from
t=10 to t=20 seconds.

The mass of the train is 106 kg.
(i) Calculate the centripetal force required to negotiate the curve.
(ii) What provides the necessary centripetal force for this purpose?
(iii) Which rail will wear out faster, the outer or the inner rail?

27 (i)State the law of conservation of angular momentum.


(ii) A child stands at the centre of a turntable with his two arms outstretched. The
turntable is set rotating with an angular speed of 40 rpm. How much is the angular
speed of the child(in rpm), if he folds his hands back and thereby reduces his 3
moment of inertia to 2/5 times the initial value?
OR
(i) Give an expression for the position vector of centre of mass of a two
particle system.

(ii) The separation between C and O atoms in carbon monoxide is


1.2 x 10-10 m. Calculate the distance of the centre of mass relative to
carbon atom. (Mass of C=12 u, Mass of O=16 u)

28 (i)State Hooke’s law.

29 Read the paragraph and answer the following questions based on related concepts:- 4
BANKING OF ROADS
The maximum permissible velocity with which a vehicle can go round a level
curved road without skidding depends on µ, the coefficient of friction between the
tyres and the road.

The value of µ decreases when road is smooth or tyres of the vehicle are worn out
or the road is wet and so on. Thus force of friction is not a reliable source for
providing the required centripetal force to the vehicle. A safer course of action
would be to do the ‘banking’ of such roads.

TORQUE ACTING AT A POINT

The turning effect of a force is called moment of the force or torque. It is measured
as the product of the magnitude of the force and the perpendicular distance between
the line of action of the force and the axis of rotation.

Torque, 𝜏 = r F Sin𝜃. In vector form, 𝜏⃗ = 𝑟⃗ x 𝐹⃗


The direction of 𝜏⃗ is perpendicular to the plane of 𝑟⃗ and 𝐹⃗ . And its sense is given
by right hand rule.

(i) State Parallelogram law of Vector addition.
(ii) Two vectors A and B are inclined to each other at an angle θ. Using the above
law find the magnitude and direction of their resultant.
(iii)Two equal forces have their resultant equal to either, find the angle between the
two vectors.
32 (i) Define elastic collision. 5

(ii)Prove that in an elastic one-dimensional collision between two bodies, the


relative velocity of approach before collision is equal to the relative velocity of
separation after collision. Also derive expressions for the final velocities of two
bodies in terms of their initial velocities before collision.
OR
(i) Define potential energy and kinetic energy of a body.
(ii)State the law of conservation of mechanical energy. Show that total mechanical
energy of a body falling freely under gravity is conserved.
33 (i) Derive an expression for acceleration due to gravity at an altitude h from the
surface of the Earth.
(ii)If the diameter of the Earth becomes twice its present value but its mass remains 5
unchanged, then how would the weight of an object on the surface of the Earth
be affected?
(iii)What is the ratio of the force of attraction between two bodies kept in air and
the same distance apart in water?
OR
(i)Derive an expression for escape velocity from the surface of the Earth.
(ii)Does the escape velocity depend on the direction of projection of a body
from the Earth’s surface?
(iii)Why is it that there is no atmosphere on the moon?
