DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH 10

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard
The learners demonstrate their multiliteracies and communicative competence in
evaluating informational texts (journalistic texts: documentaries and vlogs) for
clarity of meaning, purpose, and target audience as a foundation for publishing
original informational texts.
B. Performance Standard
The learners analayze the style, form and features of informational texts
(documentaries and vlogs); evaluate informational texts for clarity of meaning,
purpose, and target audience; and compose and publish original multimodal
informational texts (documentaries and vlogs) using appropriate forms and
structures that represent their meaning, purpose, and target audience.
C. Learning Competencies
Publishing a multimodal informational text for one’s purpose and target audience

A. Review
Just a quick recap on what we have learned
yesterday, what is a rhetorical question again? A rhetorical question is a question asked in
order to create a dramatic effect or to make a
point rather than to get an answer.

Very good! Can you enumerate the benefits of

a rhetorical question?  Engage the audience
 Increase the variety of your
presentation
 Influence and persuade the audience
 Subtly draw attention and emphasize
specific points
 Introduce topics or ideas
 Make the listeners think about
certain topic

Absolutely! It’s impressive that you can

confidently recall the important details about
the topic we covered yesterday.

B. Motivation
Before we dive into our new topic for today,
let's start with an engaging warm-up activity
that I like to call “Interpret the Picture.” In this
activity, I will present you with a series of
images, each containing unique elements that
convey specific themes or messages. Your task
will be to analyze these pictures closely and
uncover their meanings by considering both
individual elements and how they interact with
each other.

For example:

= BREAKTIME

Are you guys ready? Yes, sir!

If that is the case, then let’s begin!

C. Presentation of the lesson

Today, we're going to explore Multimodals and
its Elements.

What is Multimodal Text?

Multimodal text is a text that uses more than
one mode of communication to convey a
message.

Now what do we mean when we say mode?

It is a way or manner in which something
occurs or is experienced, expressed, or done.

There are Five Modes and these are the

following:
1. Visual
It is conveyed through choices of visual
resources and includes both still images and
moving images. Images may include diverse
cultural connotations, symbolism and portray
different people, cultures and practices.
Visual resources include: framing, vectors,
symbols, perspective, gaze, point of view,
color, texture, line shape, distance, angles,
form, power, involvement/detachment,
contrast, lighting, naturalistic/non-naturalistic,
camera movement and subject movement.

Let us take a look at this picture.

At the road, sir.

Where do you often see this sign? The yellow diamond-shaped sign with a
Very good! What does this mean? black arrow pointing up and to the right
indicates a merge right situation.

This means that the lane you are currently in

will soon merge with the lane to your right.
You should prepare to merge safely into the
right lane when it is safe to do so.

Good job! And upon looking at this sign what

do you do then as a driver? Remember to:

 Signal your intention: Use your turn

signal to indicate that you plan to
merge right.
 Check your mirrors: Ensure there is
enough space to merge safely.
 Adjust your speed: Slow down if
necessary to match the speed of the
traffic in the right lane.
 Merge smoothly: Avoid abruptly
cutting into the right lane.

Perfect! What you all said are correct. So, an

example of a visual mode is the merge to the
right sign wherein the message is conveyed
through an image.

Let us take a look at this another example.

The picture conveys a message of hope,

By looking at the poster itself, what is the harmony, and sustainability. It suggests that
meaning that it depicts? by working together and respecting the
environment, we can create a better future
for all.

That is right! So that is the visual mode. Now

let us proceed with the next mode which is the
Aural or Audio
The aural mode is focused on sound including,
but not limited to, music, sound effects,
ambient noises, silence, tone of voice in spoken
language, volume of sound, emphasis, and
accent.

Are you fond of watching movies? Yes, sir.

When you hear footsteps, what does it suggest?

Creaking footsteps often indicate that a
threat is approaching.
How about heavy breathing?
It indicates fear.
What do you feel when you hear lightning or
thunder in a movie?
I feel scared to the point that I just want to
go outside and leave the movie open inside
the house.
That is the use of audio mode. Even though we
are not able to hear a single word but then
again upon hearing some effects as that of a
horror movie, it may impose different feelings
on us such as fear, fright, and excitement.

Let us go with the third mode which is the

Gestural mode.
The gestural mode “refers to the way
movement is interpreted. Facial expressions,
hand gestures, body language, and interaction
between people are all gestural modes. This has
always been important in face-to-face
conversations and in theater, but it has become
more apparent on the web lately with the wide
use of YouTube and other video players. The
gestural mode works with linguistic, visual,
aural, and sometimes even spatial modes in
order to create more detail and convey it better
to the consumer”
Look at me and interpret my movement.
(The teacher claps his hands)

This means what?

That is right. How about this one… Very good or good job, sir.
(The teacher slightly shrugged his shoulders
and raised his eyebrows) It means maybe sir.
Good job! And this one…
(The teacher shakes his head)

Perfect! Now It is time for you guys to show a That means denial, sir.
gesture and let your classmates identify it and
then confirm whether they are correct or not. (The student waves his hand)
Let us start. That means good bye or farewell.

(The student put his thumbs up)

That means good

(The student frowned)

Well done, everyone. Now let us proceed with It means that you are sad.
the fourth mode and that is linguistic.
The linguistic mode refers to written or spoken
words. The mode includes word choice, the
delivery of written or spoken text, the
organization of words into sentences and
paragraphs, and the development and
coherence of words and ideas. Linguistic is not
always the most important mode; this depends
on the other modes at play in the text, the type
of text, and other factors. Linguistic is probably
the most widely used mode because it can be
both read and heard on both paper or audio.
The linguistic mode is the best way to express
details and list.

Example for this one are speeches, letters and

music.

Can you provide another example for linguistic

mode?

Very good. Conversation, sir.

Now let us proceed to the last mode which is
the spatial mode.
The spatial mode, as the name implies, refers to
the arrangement of elements in space. It
involves the organization of items and the
physical closeness between people and objects.

Let us take a look at this illustrations:

texts.
Multimodality does not necessarily mean use of
technology, and multimodal texts can be paper-
based, live or digital.

Paper-based multimodal texts include picture

books, textbooks, graphic novels, comics, and
papers.

Live multimodal texts, for example, dance,

performance, oral story telling, convey
meaning through combinations of various
modes such as gestural, spatial, audio, and oral
language.

Digital multimodal texts include film,

animation, slideshow, e-posters, digital stories,
podcasts, and web pages that may include
hyperlinks to external pronunciation guides or
translations.

Do you have any questions?
