Multimodal Text

Communication is not only relaying messages through voice and

letters. It does not limit its purpose to written and verbal text.
Communication uses multimodal. When technology came into this world,
different modes of communication came to existence. They are called
multimodal.

Multimodal is a combination of the prefix multi-meaning “many”

and modal-an adjective form of the “mode”. Mode means a way of things.

Many multimodal texts are communicated through the

combinations of two or more modes. Modes include written language,
spoken language and patterns of meaning that are visual, audio, gestural

2
and spatial. These modes are also referred as semiotic systems. Semiotic
systems are the use of signs and symbols to convey meaning.

The Five Semiotic System

A. Visual
The visual mode refers to the images and characters that people
see. It involves the use of graphs, infographics, cartoons and illustrations,
videos, artwork, flowcharts, and diagrams.

B. Aural or Audio
The aural mode is focused on sound including but not limited to
music, sound effects, ambient noises, silence, and tone of voice in spoken
language, volume of sound, emphasis, and accent.

C. Gestural
The gestural mode refers to the way the movement is interpreted.
Facial expressions, hand gestures, body language, and interaction
between people are all gestural modes. It has become more apparent on
the web lately with the use of YouTube and other video players. The
gestural mode works with linguistic, visual, aural and even spatial modes
in order to create more detail and convey it better to the consumer.

D. Linguistic (or Alphabetic)

This mode refers to written or spoken words. It includes word
choice, the delivery of written or spoken text, the organization of texts
and paragraphs and the development and coherence of words and ideas.
Linguistic is probably the most widely used mode because it can be both
read and heard on both paper and audio.

E. Spatial
The spatial mode, as the name implies, refers to the arrangement of
elements in space. It involves the organization of items and the physical
closeness between people and objects.

Multimodal text can be print, physical or digital. Examples of types of

text
Multimodal texts include pictures, textbooks, graphic novels,
comics and posters, where meaning is conveyed to the readers through
varying combinations of visual, written and spatial modes.

The types of Multimodal Texts- Multimodal texts can be delivered in

various media or technologies:

3
 Digital multimodal texts such as film, animation, slide shows, e-
posters, digital stories, and web pages, convey meaning through
combinations of written and spoken language, visual, audio,
gestural and spatial modes.
 Live multimodal texts, for example, dance, performance, and oral
storytelling convey meaning through combinations of modes such
as gestural, spatial, spoken language, and audio.
 Visual multimodal texts, for example, representation of people,
objects, and places can be conveyed using visual semiotic resources
such as line, shape, size, and symbols.

Below are examples of multimodal texts.

How to compose multimodal text?

Although multimodal texts combine two or more modes of

communication and the use of technology is a factor for quality
production, creating multimodal texts do not always use high technology.
There are strategies that you can follow to compose and design multi
modal texts. These are the following:
1. Apply Visual Concepts
Understanding visual concept will help you create and design multimodal
text. These basic elements are:
a. Space. This gives you the idea of how to balance text and
images in your output. Considering the space would allow you to
identify position of text and images for emphasis.
b. Color. Use color combination that are not invasive to the
viewers or readers. Use it to emphasize specific meaning and
highlight ideas.
c. Shapes. Look for shapes that would be relevant and make
sense, so it becomes an authentic part of the text.
d. Lines. Different types of lines when used in creating
multimodal text, stress a word or a phrase. It also creates divisions among
the different parts of the text or create visual patterns.
e. Font. Select font size and style that are easy to read. It added
value to your text and helps readers/viewers to perceive information from
the text. The use of font style and size establish mood or feeling among
the readers. The choice of such and other elements such as colors
determines how the content of your text is understood.
When these visual concepts are considered, it helps you identify what
should be prioritized in the eyes of your readers. This will establish
repetition patterns that will help them understand the relationship
between and among the different elements.

5
2. Know your purpose. In creating text with different features that add
to the meaning of the text, think of the purpose why it was created. It
should convey to the reader the aim of the text. Does it inform, entertain,
or persuade?
3. Identify you audience. Considering the type of audience, you are
producing the text for, gives an idea what specific language you will use.
There is certain type of audience that require appropriate language for
instance, children are attracted for bigger fonts, different playful shapes
and documents that are text- heavy are avoided.
Why is multimodal text important?
Why do you have to learn and use multimodal text? These are the
importance of multimodal texts:
1. It improves your comprehension. The use of multiple modes of
communication helps you understand information better and effectively.
2. It increases your motivation and interaction. The use of images,
graphics, films and other multimodal text that your teacher use in
presenting your lesson activate your interest and engage you in activities.
3. It allows you to express your creativity by navigating multiple modes. It
encourages you to create and express your learning in a creatively. It can
also pave a way in enhancing your passion in other disciplines such as
Arts and ICT.
