Assignment -Traffic-Structure Design
Q3. A six-lane (three in each direction) rural interstate highway has a truck count of 1885 per
day (including two-axle, four-tire panel and pickup trucks) and an annual growth rate of
4%. The hot mix asphalt will be laid on an untreated granular base, 8 inches thickness,
which is placed on a subgrade with a resilient modulus of 10,000 psi.
a) Referring to tables for distribution of trucks and truck factors on different
highways, calculate ESAL for a design period of 20 years.
The vehicle mix is expected to remain the same throughout the design life of the pavement. If
the expected annual traffic growth rate is 4 percent for all vehicles, determine the design
ESAL using Load Equivalency Factors. Given a design period of 20 years.
Q5. A 6 lane divided highway is expected to have an average annual daily traffic in both
directions during the first year of operation of 18000. The traffic composition is expected to
be as follows:
If the annual growth rate is expected to be 3% for the passenger car and the 2-axle single unit
trucks, and 5% for the other truck categories, determine the total ESAL for a 30-year design
period.
Q6. This projected vehicle mix for a proposed 2 – lane rural highway during its first year of
operation is given below.
If the first AADT will be 3000, the annual growth rate is 5 percent, and the design period is
20 year. Determine the accumulated ESAL using The Truck Factors.
Q7. Calculate the effective resilient modulus for the roadbed soil due to the following data:
Season CBR of Roadbed soil, %
Spring 7
Summer 15
Autumn 12
Winter 5
Q8. Figure (1) is a pavement system with resilient modulus layer coefficients, and drainage
coefficients as shown. If predicted ESAL = 50x106, Reliability = 95%, standard deviation
= 0.35, and PSI = 2.1. Select Thicknesses D1, D2, and D3.
Q9. An interstate highway pavement composed of a Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) surface course.
A cement treated base course, and a sand-gravel subbase is to be designed for an ESAL
of 1.2x106. The quality of drainage is considered fair because water can be removed from
the subbase within a week. However, there is a large amount of rain, so more than 25%
of the time the pavement will be exposed to moisture levels approaching saturation. The
material properties are as follows: effective roadbed soil resilient modulus = 5,500 psi,
resilient modulus of subbase = 15,000 psi, resilient modulus of base = 40,000 psi, and
resilient modulus of HMA = 4.3x105 psi. Assuming a minimum thickness for HMA,
determine the thicknesses of the surface, base, and subbase required.
