Parts of Speech Lecture Sheet

Introduction: The parts of speech are the basic building blocks of language. Every word in a
sentence belongs to one of these categories. Understanding parts of speech helps in constructing
clear and effective sentences.

1. Noun (N):

 A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.


 Examples: dog, city, love, teacher, happiness

Types of Nouns:

 Proper Noun: Names a specific person, place, or thing (capitalized).


o Example: London, John, Mars
 Common Noun: Refers to general things or concepts.
o Example: book, car, country

2. Pronoun (PR):

 A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun to avoid repetition.


 Examples: he, she, it, they, we, I

Types of Pronouns:

 Personal Pronoun: Refers to specific people or things.


o Example: I, you, he, she
 Possessive Pronoun: Shows ownership.
o Example: my, your, his, hers
 Reflexive Pronoun: Refers back to the subject of the sentence.
o Example: myself, yourself, themselves

3. Verb (V):

 A verb expresses an action or a state of being.


 Examples: run, eat, sing, am, was, are

Types of Verbs:

 Action Verb: Describes physical or mental actions.


o Example: run, jump, think
 Linking Verb: Connects the subject to a subject complement.
o Example: am, is, are, was, were

4. Adjective (Adj):

 An adjective modifies or describes a noun or pronoun.


 Examples: beautiful, tall, quick, happy

Types of Adjectives:

 Descriptive Adjective: Describes the quality of a noun.


o Example: blue, delicious, slow
 Quantitative Adjective: Describes the quantity of a noun.
o Example: many, few, several

5. Adverb (Adv):

 An adverb modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb.


 Examples: quickly, very, well, slowly

Types of Adverbs:

 Manner Adverb: Describes how something happens.


o Example: carefully, easily
 Time Adverb: Describes when something happens.
o Example: yesterday, now, soon

6. Preposition (Prep):

 A preposition shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another word in
the sentence.
 Examples: in, on, at, between, under

Preposition Examples:

 The book is on the table.


 She sat between John and Sarah.
7. Conjunction (Conj):

 A conjunction connects words, phrases, or clauses.


 Examples: and, but, or, because, although

Types of Conjunctions:

 Coordinating Conjunction: Connects words or groups of words of equal importance.


o Example: and, but, or
 Subordinating Conjunction: Connects a dependent clause to an independent clause.
o Example: because, although, if

8. Interjection (Interj):

 An interjection is a word or phrase that expresses strong emotion or surprise.


 Examples: Wow! Ouch! Oh! Hooray!
