SUBJECT: PHYSICS M.M.: 70 MARKS


CLASS: XII TIME: 3 Hrs.
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
(1) There are 33 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
(2) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D
and Section E.
(3) All the sections are compulsory.
(4) Section A contains sixteen questions, twelve MCQ and four Assertion Reasoning
based of 1 mark each, Section B contains five questions of two marks each, Section
C contains seven questions of three marks each, Section D contains two case study
based questions of four marks each and Section E contains three long answer
questions of five marks each.
(5) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one
question in Section B, one question in Section C, one question in each CBQ in
Section D and all three questions in Section E. You have to attempt only one of the
choices in such questions.
(6) Use of calculators is not allowed.

17 The resistance of the platinum wire of a platinum resistance thermometer at 2
the ice point is 5 Ω and at steam point is 5.39 Ω. When the thermometer is
inserted in a hot bath, the resistance of the platinum wire is 5.795 Ω. Calculate
the temperature of the bath.
OR
A storage battery of emf 8.0 V and internal resistance 0.5 Ω is being charged
by a 120 V dc supply using a series resistor of 15.5 Ω. What is the terminal
voltage of the battery during charging? What is the purpose of having a series
resistor in the charging circuit?
18 A ray PQ incident on the refracting surface BA is refracted in the prism BAC 2
as shown in the figure and emerged from the other refracting face AC as RS
such that AQ = AR. If the angle of prism A = 60⁰ and refractive index of the
material of the prism is √3, calculate the angle θ.

19 (a) A convex length of focal length f1 is kept in contact with a concave lens 2
of focal length f2. Find the focal length of the combination.
(b) Two thin lenses of power + 6 D and – 2 D are in contact. What is the
focal length of the combination.
20 (a) An alpha particle and a proton are accelerated from rest by the same 2
potential. Find the ratio of their de Broglie wavelength.
(b) Write Einstein’s photoelectric equation and using this explain the concept
of threshold frequency.

21 Draw the circuit arrangement of a p-n junction diode in (i) forward bias, (ii) 2
reverse bias. Draw the typical V-I characteristics and mark breakdown voltage
and knee voltage.
SECTION C
22 State Kirchhoff’s laws. A battery of 10 V and negligible internal resistance is 3
connected across the diagonally opposite corners of a cubical network
consisting of 12 resistors each of resistance 1 Ω . Determine the equivalent
resistance of the network.

23 Figure shows a long straight wire of a circular cross-section (radius a) 3


carrying steady current I. The current I is uniformly distributed across this
cross-section. Using Ampere’s Circuital law ,calculate the magnetic field in
the region r < a and r > a. Also show a plot of the magnitude of B with
distance r from the centre of the wire

(a) If the magnetic field is parallel to the positive y-axis and the charged
particle is moving along the positive x-axis which way would the magnetic
Lorentz force be for (a) an electron and (b) a proton.
(b) A straight wire of mass 200 g and length 1.5 m carries a current of 2 A.
It is suspended in mid-air by a uniform horizontal magnetic field B . What is
the magnitude of the magnetic field?

(a) An electrostatic field line is a continuous curve. That is, a field line
cannot have sudden breaks.
(b) Electrostatic field lines do not form any closed loops.
(c) Two field lines can never cross each other.
25 (a) A conducting coil is moving in a non uniform magnetic field such that its 3
plane is perpendicular to the direction of magnetic field. Will any emf be

induced in the coil. If yes, state the law which gives the direction of induced
emf in the coil.
(b) How does the mutual inductance of a pair of coils change when (i)
Distance between the coils is increased and (ii) Number of turns in the coils
is increased ? Explain.
26 (a) A capacitor is being charged by connecting it across a dc source along 3
with an ammeter. Will the ammeter show a momentary deflection during the
process of charging? If so, how would you explain the momentary
deflection and the resulting continuity of the circuit ? Write the expression
for the current in the circuit.
(b) Identify the electromagnetic spectrum used (i) in remote switches for
household electronic circuits and (ii) as diagnostic tool in medicine.
27 State any two postulates of Bohr’s Atomic model. Using Bohr’s postulates, 3
show that radii of first three orbits of the electron in hydrogen atom is in the
ratio of 1:4:9.
28 (a) A nucleus with mass number A = 240 and B.E. /A= 7.6 MeV breaks into 3
two fragments each of A=120 with B.E. /A = 8.5 MeV. Calculate the
released energy.
(b) Draw a plot of potential energy of a pair of nucleons as a function of
their separation. From the graph write any one property of nuclear forces.

Diffraction is the interference or bending of waves around the corners of an
obstacle or through an aperture into the region of geometrical shadow of the
obstacle/aperture. The diffracting object or aperture effectively becomes a
secondary source of the propagating wave. Italian scientist Francesco Maria
Grimaldi coined the word diffraction and was the first to record accurate
observations of the phenomenon in 1660.

A rectifier is an electrical device that converts alternating current (AC), which
periodically reverses direction, to direct current (DC), which flows in only one
direction. The reverse operation (converting DC to AC) is performed by
an inverter. In half-wave rectification of a single-phase supply, either the
positive or negative half of the AC wave is passed, while the other half is
blocked. Because only one half of the input waveform reaches the output,
mean voltage is lower. Half-wave rectification requires a single diode in
a single-phase supply.

(b) A charge of 8mC is located at the origin. Calculate the work done in
taking a small charge of -2 x 10-9 C from a point P ( 0,0,3cm) to a point
Q ( 0, 4cm, 0) via a point R ( 0, 6 cm , 9 cm ).
(c) A cube of side b has a charge q at each of its vertices. Determine the
electric potential due to this charge array at the centre of the cube.

(a) Derive a relation between electric field and electric potential.
(b) How would electric field inside a conductor and insulator get modified
when placed in external electric field.
(c) A hollow metal sphere of radius 10 cm is charged such that the potential
on its surface is 5 V. What is the potential at the centre of the sphere?
32 (a) Derive an expression for the average power consumed in a series LCR 5
circuit connected to an ac source in which the phase difference between the
voltage and the current in the circuit is Φ. Hence define wattles current and
power factor of the circuit.
(b) A capacitor (C) and resistor (R) are connected in series with an ac
source of voltage of frequency 50 Hz. The potential difference across C and
R are respectively 120V, 90 V and the current in the circuit is 3 A. Calculate
the impedance of the circuit. 5
OR
(a) State the condition for resonance to occur in a series LCR circuit and
derive an expression for the resonant frequency. Draw a plot showing the
variation of peak current (im) with frequency of the ac source used.
(b) Consider a series LCR circuit connected to a variable frequency 230 V
source with L = 5.0 H,C = 80 µF, R = 40 Ω.
(i) Determine the source frequency makes the power factor of the
circuit unity.
(ii) Obtain the impedance of the circuit and the amplitude of the
current at the resonating frequency.
(iii) Determine the potential drop across Resistance.
33 (a) Draw a ray diagram to show image formation when the concave mirror 5
produces a real, inverted and magnified image of the object. Using the
diagram Obtain the mirror formula and write the expression for the linear
magnification.
(b) A beam of light converges at a point P. Now a lens is placed in the path
of the convergent beam 12 cm from P. At what point does the beam
converge if the lens is (a) a convex lens of focal length 20cm, and (b) a
concave lens of focal length 16cm?

(a) Draw a labeled ray diagram of compound microscope and write an
expression for its magnifying power.
(b)The focal length of the objective and eye lens of a compound microscope
are 2 cm, 6.25 cm respectively. The distance between the lenses is 15 cm.
How far from the objective lens, will the object be kept, so as to obtain the
final image at the least distance of distinct vision of the eye ? Also calculate
its magnifying power.
