CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF “The Necklace”

Critical Analysis of “The Necklace”

Summary: We first encounter Matilde Loisel at the start of the narrative, a middle-

class girl who fervently longs to be affluent. Despite her attractiveness and charm, she was

born into a family of clerks, and her parents eventually married her off to M. Loisel, another

Department of Education clerk. Matilda hates her real life and spends her days daydreaming

and moping about the amazing life she's not enjoying since she is so sure she was destined to

be wealthy. She imagines expensive furniture, feasts, footmen, and strings of wealthy young

men to entice. One day, M. Loisel receives an invitation to his boss, the Minister of

Education’s elegant party at home. Even though M. Loisel went to great lengths to obtain the

invitation, Matilda reacts angrily at first. She is unable to go and doesn't have something

pleasant to wear! How could her spouse be so callous? Unsure of what to do, M. Loisel offers

to purchase his wife a dress—as long as it's not too pricey. He gives in when Matilda asks for

400 francs. But it doesn't take long for Matilda to lose it again—this time, because she is

without any diamonds. Mme. Loisel advises her to visit Mme. Forestier, a wealthy

acquaintance who may be able to provide her with a loan. When Matilda visits Mme.

Forestier, she is fortunate. Matilda gets to take home a stunning necklace made of diamonds.

She will be really stunning with the jewellery on. When ball time finally arrives, Mathilde is

having the best time of her life. She is overjoyed and everyone adores her. It is 4am when she

and her husband leave (he nods off in a corner). Abruptly, Matilda bolts outside to hide from

sight in her ratty coat. She takes a cab home with her spouse. However, Matilda discovers

with horror that the diamond necklace is missing when she gets home. M. Loisel looks for the

necklace throughout the entire next day and even the following week, but she is unable to

locate it. It is no longer there. Thus, he and Mathilde determine that purchasing a new

jewellery for Mme. Forestiera is their only option. They keep going to jewellery stores till

they eventually locate a necklace that exactly matches the one they misplaced. Regretfully, it

is thirty-six thousand francs, precisely double the total amount of money that M. Loisel

possesses. Thus, M. Loisel incurs enormous debt in order to purchase the necklace, which

Matilda then returns to Mme. Forestier, who is unaware of the substitution. The Loisel’s

plunge into destitution for the following ten years after purchasing the jewellery. Yes, a full

ten years.

Private life and public life: Individuals typically exhibit two distinct

personalities based on their personal and private life. Matilda attempted to present herself as a

sophisticated, beautiful,

Craving for Luxuary: Matilda was obsessed with wealth and extravagance. She faced

the situation because of this necklace mishap.

Greed: People who are conceited and greedy are sad. The woman in the story is

gorgeous, but she has higher standards for herself. Despite having a nice life, she is never

content and always ends up in worse shape. On outside, wealthy woman, but in private, she

was an ordinary poor girl.

Author's message: "The Necklace" theme is that one must be happy with what they

have. Another theme is that living within one's means is important.

Conclusion: The author of the short story "The Necklace" is Guy de Maupassant. In

the short story, the necklace is a symbol of false status and avarice as well as a better life for

Mathilde. The primary takeaway from "The Necklace" is the destructive nature of

materialism and selfish behaviour, which can result in an unfulfilling and difficult life.
