The Cons of Using AI in Education: A Case Study on Students

INTRODUCTION

The area of computer science known as artificial intelligence (AI) focuses on creating devices,
or computers, that can mimic human behavior. Artificial intelligence encompasses a variety of
technologies such as robots, game playing, expert systems, natural language processing, neural
networks, and more. The term was first used in 1956 by John McCarthy at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology in the USA (Kumar, 2016). AI systems have a significant advantage in
education by providing effective support for learning and teaching, including personalizing
learning for students, automating teachers' mundane duties, and powering adaptive evaluations
(Kyoungwon, et al., 2021). However, The latest advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have
resulted in substantial strides in AI assistants, AI tools, and AI chatbots’ capabilities and what
they can perform in many sectors such as healthcare, automated cars, gaming playing, and art
generation, music and poetry, fraud detection, evaluating user preferences for items, music and
videos, Natural Language Processing, language translation, summary, and paraphrasing.
Additionally, AI models can produce written content, including research. publications in which
advanced algorithms generate text based on user instructions. AI can identify relevant material
using semantics, search and do a literature review (Al-Jarf, 2024). In conclusion, this study aims
to reveal the negative impacts of AI in educational field.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The purpose of this study is to determine the cons of AI in education. Moreover this sought to
answer the following question:

1.How does AI affect students negatively?

2. Does AI amend student's critical thinking skills?

3. Is there an ethical concern for student’s privacy when using AI in education?

ANALYSIS

1.Negative Impacts of AI on Students:

Dependency on AI Tools:
Students might become overly dependent on AI tools for learning and
problem-solving, potentially undermining their ability to think independently
and solve problems without technological assistance.

2. Privacy and Ethical Concerns:

Data Security:
The use of AI in education
involves collecting and analyzing vast amounts of student data, raising
concerns about data privacy and security.

3. Impact on Learning and Cognitive Skills:

Critical Thinking and Creativity:

Over-reliance on AI for information retrieval and problem-solving may
hinder the development of critical thinking and creative skills. When students
use AI-generated content or solutions, they might miss out on the deeper
cognitive processes involved in learning and understanding complex
concepts.

Reduction in Deep Learning:

AI tools that provide instant answers can discourage students from
engaging in deep, meaningful learning and reflection, leading to a superficial
understanding of subjects. Additionally, it can negatively impact students'
critical thinking skills in several ways.

Reduction in Analytical Skills:

When students rely on AI to generate answers and solve problems, they

may not develop the necessary analytical skills to evaluate and synthesize
information critically.

Decreased Problem-Solving Abilities:

AI's ability to provide quick solutions can lead to a decline in students'

problem-solving skills, as they may not learn to approach challenges
methodically and persistently.

Lack of Originality:
Students might use AI to paraphrase or summarize texts, leading to a lack
of originality in their work. This can stifle their ability to generate unique
ideas and contribute creatively to discussions and projects.

SOLUTION

While AI has the potential to encourage creativity and imagination in education, it is important
to strike a balance and not rely solely on technology. By combining AI-powered tools with
traditional teaching methods, educators can create an environment that fosters creativity while
also promoting critical thinking and independent problem-solving skills.

Encourage Critical Thinking: Incorporate activities that promote analysis, synthesis, and
evaluation of information, helping students develop independent thought.

Data Protection Measures: Implement strong data protection measures, such as encryption,
anonymization techniques, and secure storage protocols, to safeguard student information from
unauthorized access or breaches.

Balanced Approach: Encourage a balanced approach to learning that integrates AI tools with
traditional teaching methods. AI can be used to personalize learning experiences and provide
real-time feedback, while educators focus on nurturing critical thinking, creativity, and problem-
solving skills.

Collaborative Learning: Encourage group work where students share ideas and learn from each
other, promoting discussion over dependence on technology.

Teach Ethical Use of AI: Include discussions on academic integrity, plagiarism, and the
importance of originality in assignments.

Skill Development: Emphasize the development of skills that AI cannot easily replicate, such as
emotional intelligence, interpersonal communication, and complex decision-making. Design
curriculum and learning activities that challenge students to apply knowledge and engage in deep
learning experiences.
Hands-On Activities: Incorporate practical, hands-on projects that require active participation
and problem-solving.

RECOMMENDATION

To avoid the negative effects of AI in education, it is crucial to implement a balanced and

thoughtful approach. Firstly, educators should ensure that AI tools are used to supplement rather
than replace human teachers. This helps maintain the essential human connection in learning and
allows for personalized instruction that AI cannot fully replicate. Secondly, there should be a
strong emphasis on digital literacy, teaching students and educators alike about the responsible
use of AI. This includes understanding its limitations, potential biases, and the importance of
data privacy. Additionally, it is important to involve all stakeholders, including teachers, parents,
and students, in discussions about AI implementation to ensure it meets the community’s
educational goals and values. Finally, continuous monitoring and assessment of AI tools should
be conducted to ensure they are enhancing learning outcomes without causing harm. By taking
these steps, we can harness the benefits of AI in education while mitigating its potential
drawbacks.

CONCLUSION

Even though AI has great potential to improve education, there are a number of serious issues
and disadvantages that need to be resolved. Careful thought must be given to issues such an
excessive reliance on technology, privacy issues, unequal access, possible job displacement,
ethical issues, and the possibility of a decline in human connection. The integration of artificial
intelligence (AI) in educational contexts is further complicated by factors such as resistance to
change, technical restrictions, implementation costs, and the quality of instructional content. As
we move forward, it will be critical for educators, legislators, and tech developers to work
together to overcome these obstacles and make sure that AI is used in education in a way that
maximizes its advantages while minimizing its risks.
