UNIT-I
1. What is Planck’s law of radiation, phase velocity, group velocity, modified X-ray and unmodified X-ray
2. Discuss the outcome of Davission- Germer experiment in detail.
3. Derive the time independent and dependent Schrodinger wave equation
4. Apply Schrodinger time independent wave equation for a particle in one dimensional box and find wave
function associated with the particle.
5. Deduce an expression for Compton shift. Explain why Compton shift is not observed in visible light.
6. i) Calculate the K.E. of an electron if its de-Broglie wavelength is 6000Å.
ii) An electron is bound in one dimensional potential box which has width 10 A. Assuming the height of
box is infinite, calculate the amount of energy required to excite electron to first excited state.
ii) A particle is moving in one dimensional potential box of length 25Å. Calculate the probability of
finding the particle within an interval of 5 Å at the center of the box when it is in its minimum energy
states.
iv) The wavelength of an X-ray photon is doubled on being scattered through 30o with a carbon block in a
Compton Experiment. Find out the wavelength of the incident photon.
UNIT-II
1. State and derive Poynting theorem (work energy theorem) for the flow of energy in electromagnetic waves
2. Derive Maxwell's third and fourth equations in their differential form and explain the physical significance
of each equation.
3. Derive the wave equation for electromagnetic waves in free space starting from Maxwell's equations, find
the general solution, and show that the wave velocity equals the speed of light.
4. i) Calculate the skin depth at a frequency of 3 x 106 Hz in aluminium, given σ=38×106 S/m\ and µr=1, and
εr =1. (Given: μ0 =4π×10−7 H/m).
ii) Assuming that all the energy from a 1000 watt lamp is radiated uniformly, calculate the average values
of the intensities of electric and magnetic fields of radiation at a distance of 2m from the lamp.
iii) A material has conductivity of 10-5 S/cm and εr = 2.5. If electric field intensity is 𝑬 = 10−6 𝑆𝑖𝑛(106 𝑡),
then find the conduction and displacement current density. Given that ϵ0 = 8.85 x 10-12 F/m.
UNIT-III
1. Explain the formation of Newton's rings in monochromatic light. Show that in reflected light, the
diameters of dark rings are proportional to the square roots of natural numbers.
2. Derive the conditions for constructive and destructive interference in uniform thin films for both reflected
and transmitted light systems.
3. Discuss the phenomenon of Fraunhofer diffraction due to single slit and show that the relative intensities
of successive maximas are nearly 1: 4/9π2: 4/25π2: 4/49π2……..
4. Explain rayleigh’s criteria of resolution. Derive an expression for resolving power of a grating.
5. i) Newton’s rings are observed between the Plano convex lens of redius of curvature 100cm and a
plane plate. The diameter of the 5th and 15th rings are 11.37 and 14.28mm. Deduce the diameters
of 25th ring.
ii)Light of wavelength 5000 Å falls normally on a plane transmission grating having 15000 lines in 3 cm.
Find the angle of diffraction for maximum intensity in the first-order.
iii) A thin film of refractive index 1.43 is illuminated by white light incident at the angle of
300.The reflected light is examined by spectroscope in which a dark band corresponds to the
wavelength of 6000Å is observed. Calculate the thickness of the thin film.

iv) Interference fringes are produced by monochromatic light fall normally on a wedge shaped
thin film whose refractive index is 1.4. the angle of wedge is 20 second of an arc ant the distance
between the successive fringes is 0.25cm. Calculate the wavelength of light used.
UNIT-IV
1. Define spontaneous emission, stimulated emission and population inversion.
2. Classify the different types of optical fibers based on modes and refractive index profile.
3. Explain the construction and working principle of Ruby and Helium-Neon laser.
4. What do you understand by Attenuation and Dispersion in optical fiber? Discuss the important factor
responsible for the loss in optical fiber.
5. i) The optical power after propagating through a fiber that is 1000 m long is reduced to 35 % its original
value. Calculate fiber loss in dB/km.
ii) Calculate acceptance angle, numerical aperture and number of modes supported by the fiber if the
operating wavelength is 0.85 μm and radius of core is 25 μm, refractive index of core and cladding are
respectively 1.466 and 1.460.
iii) Calculate the population ratio of two states in He-Ne laser that produces light of wavelength
𝟕𝟎𝟎𝟎Å at 𝟏𝟐𝟕℃. Where K=1.38x10-23J/K, h=6.626x10-34Js.
UNIT-V
1. What is critical temperature, critical magnetic field and persistent current.
2. What is Quantum well, Quantum wire and Quantum dot.
3. Discuss Meissner effect. Distinguish between type I and type II superconductor. Write three applications
of superconductors.
4. Describe the formation of nano-materials by Sol-Gel/CVD method. Write applications and properties of
nano materials.
5. a) A Superconducting tin has a critical temperature of 3.7 K at zero magnetic field and a critical magnetic
field 0.0306 tesla at 0 K. Find the critical magnetic field at 2 K.
b) For a superconducting material the critical fields are 1.4 x 105 and 4.2 x 105 A/m for 14 K and 13 K
respectively. Calculate transition temperature and critical magnetic field at 0 K and 4.2 K.
