In applications where it is necessary to protect a highly sensitive microwave component (such as a low noise
receiver front-end amplifier) from damaging levels of RF power, MITEQ’s higher power solid-state microwave
switches may better serve when the time characteristics of the high power signal are known and the control circuitry
is available. In all other cases, a MITEQ limiter is the solution.
Inherently reflective in operation, (the bulk of the signal is returned along the input path), a limiter “turns on” solely
in response to the level of the incident signal. At nominal levels, it adds a small amount of loss to the input path.
Above a certain input power level, the loss begins to noticeably increase. As the rated input power is approached,
very little additional change in output level will be noted. The maximum “flat leakage” for each model is noted in
the accompanying table.
At first glance, adding a device such as this to a typical application may seem to require little consideration beyond
tolerance for the mechanical outline, insertion loss and leakage level. Depending upon the specific application,
there are additional characteristics which should also be considered:
FLAT LEAKAGE
A measure of the maximum steady state output level at the rated CW input power.
SPIKE LEAKAGE
For fast rising signals, additional energy will leak through to the output prior to full limiter “turn-on”. Spike leakage
is specified in ergs.
RECOVERY TIME
This parameter is the time it takes for the limiter to return to its nominal state (insertion loss) once the high power
signal is removed.
