Graphing Motion

The following data was recorded of a moving toy car. Using an Excel spreadsheet or other
graphing program, graph the data and construct a best-fit line to the data (10 points). If this is
not possible, you may use graph paper and construct your graph by hand. Remember to label
your axis and give your graph a title.

Position of Toy Car

Time (s) Position (cm)
0.0 0
1.0 4.90
2.0 9.63
3.0 14.41
4.0 18.98
5.0 23.75
6.0 28.52
7.0 33.05
8.0 37.47
9.0 41.80
10.0 45.70

Lab Questions
Show all work for calculations.

1. What is the position of the car at 5s? (2 points)

2. Find the best-fit line. What is the slope of the line, and what does the slope represent? (4
points)
3. If the car continues to travel at the same velocity, how far will it have travelled in 15
seconds? (4 points)
4. At what time will the car be at the 50.00 cm mark traveling at this constant velocity? (4
points)
5. If we were to graph another toy car that had a faster constant velocity, would you expect
to have a slope steeper or shallower than the one you graphed? Explain your reasoning. (4
points)

The graph, data table, and complete responses on lab questions are required to be submitted to
earn full credit for this lab.

You should think about these guidelines for communicating the results in a graph:
 Identify the variables. Which is the independent and which is the dependent? Independent
variable should be your x axis.
 Determine the variable range. What is your lowest data point, what is the highest?
 Determine the scale of the graph. What magnitude should each grid unit be so the graph
is not crammed together or spaced too far apart? Does the scale match the precision of
your data?
 Number and label each axis and title the graph.
 Determine the data points and plot on the graph.
