1. State the basic properties of electric charge.

Basic properties of electric charge:
1)Addivity of charges
Charges are additive in nature means they are like scalars and can be added directly.
For an example, consider a system which consists of two charges namely q1 and q2.
Now we wish to find the total charge of the system. The total charge of the system will
be the algebraic sum of q1 and q2 i.e. q1+q2.
2)Conservation of Charge
The charge is a conserved quantity which means charge can neither be created nor be
destroyed but can be transferred from one body to another by certain methods like
conduction and induction.
3)Quantization of charge
Quantization of charge means that charge is a quantized quantity and is expressed as
integral multiples of the basic unit of charge (e – charge on one electron). Suppose
charge on a body is q, then it can be written as q=ne, where n is an integer like 1, 2, 3, -
5 etc.
2. What do you mean by additive nature of electric charges?
The additive nature of charge is one of the property of electric charge. The entire
electric charge of a system is equal to the algebraic sum of electric charges located in
the system. This is the law of superimposition of electric charge.
3. State the law of conservation of charge. Give two examples to illustrate.
Law of Conservation of Charge:
It states that the electric charge can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be
transferred from one body to another. i.e. the total charge remains conserved in any
process or reaction(Physical, Chemical or Nuclear).
Examples:
1. When two bodies(initially neutral) are charged by rubbing, Charge is transferred from
one body to another. But total charge on both bodies still remains zero.
2. During radioactive decay, a proton(charge +e) decays into a positron(charge +e) and
a neutron. In this case also, the total charge remains same
4. What is quantization of electric charge? Write the expression. What is the cause of
quantization of electric charge? What is the minimum value of positive valuethat a body
can have?
Quantisation of charge
1. The charge is always represented in the form of, q=n×e. Here n is an integer and
e is the charge (- for electron and + for proton).
2. The magnitude of e = 1.602192 ×10−19 This is called quantization of charge. SI
unit of charge is Coulomb (C).
3. In other words, it says that the charge can only exist in nature in the form of the
integral multiple of charge on one electron or proton.
Expression
q = ne ; n is an integer + or - and e is the charge on an electron.

Cause of quantization of electric charge

The basic cause of quantisation of electric charge is that only integral number of
electrons can be transferred from one body to another.

is the least value of charge that can be given to a body.

Explanation:
The charge on an electron is coulomb, which is the smallest conceivable
amount of a charge since the quantization law requires that the charge on a body be an
integral multiple of the charge on an electron.
 A proton or an electron with a charge of is the smallest quantity of
charge capable of free existence.
 Electrons, also known as protons, are charged particles found inside an atom
that have equal and opposing charges in order to maintain the atom's neutrality.
 The value of one electron is the charge's minimum value which is .

5. Why can one ignore quantisation of electric charge when dealing with
macroscopic i.e., large scale charges?
 Quantization of charge means that the amount of charge on a body is integral
multiple of smallest unit of charge, which is electronic charge e i.e. Q=ne, where
n is integer
 This smallest unit of charge(e) is practically very small, e=1.6×10−19C.
 On macroscopic level, amount of charge transferred is very large as compared
to e.
 Therefore, quantization has no significance at such a large scale.
6. Calculate the number of electrons constituting -1C of charge?
