Documents Limiting the English Monarchy: Emoji Edition

Directions: Below you will learn about the Magna Carta, Petition of Right, and English Bill of Rights by reading background information and
excerpts from the documents.
For each excerpt you read, you will create an emoji/symbol that represents that section. Then, you will explain how your emoji represents the
section of the text.
The Magna Carta
In June of 1215, King John agreed to sign the Magna Carta. It’s sometimes called by its full Latin name, Magna Carta
Libertatum, which means “great charter of freedoms.” This document was a massive step toward creating a constitutional
government—one where a king or leader would be limited by a governing document. When English nobles forced King John
to sign the Magna Carta, they were ensuring the political rights of the ruling class and limiting the power of the king.

The Petition of Right

In 1628, members of Parliament sent the Petition of Right to King Charles I. They outlined their complaints against the king and asked
for the king to uphold their rights: no taxation without Parliament’s consent, no unfair imprisonment, no use of the military during
peacetime, and no forced quartering (housing and feeding) of soldiers.

“Your subjects have of late been

imprisoned without any cause showed…
and yet were returned back to several
prisons, without being charged with
anything…”

“[Your subjects] do therefore humbly pray

your most excellent Majesty, that no man
hereafter be compelled to make or yield
any gift, loan, benevolence, tax, or such
like charge, without common consent by
act of parliament.”
“And whereas of late, great companies of
soldiers and mariners have been dispersed
into…counties of the realm, and the
inhabitants against their wills have been
compelled to receive them into their
houses…to the great grievance and
vexation of the people.”
“…They do therefore humbly pray your
most excellent Majesty…would be pleased
to remove the said soldiers and mariners,
and that your people may not be so
burdened in time to come.”

English Bill of Rights

After the overthrow of King James II, William III and Mary II became the rulers of England as part of the “Glorious Revolution.” As a
part of this transition, leaders signed the English Bill of Rights in 1689. The English Bill of Rights listed the many ways King James had
“subverted” the freedoms of English people including unfair and expensive taxes, ignoring laws, building a large army in peacetime,
large fines, cruel punishments, and jailing people without a fair trial. This document once again limited the power of the monarchy
and gave certain rights to the English ruling class.

“That excessive bail ought not to be

required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor
