eligibility criteria.
9 Medical registration: You have current Australian or New Zealand medical registration and hold (or
expect to hold) general registration by the commencement of training.
9 Residency status: You’re an Australian or New Zealand permanent resident or citizen or hold a
Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) 482, 485, 820, 491 or 494 visa.
9 Exam candidacy: You have at least two exam semesters remaining if you have already sat RACGP

Australian General Practice Training Program
Program guide
Training structure
Whether your interested in training in a general pathway, a rural pathway, or as a Rural
Generalist, we’ve got you covered.
The AGPT Program is a three year full-time equivalent training program for doctors pursuing Fellowship
of RACGP (FRACGP) or a four year full-time equivalent program for doctors pursuing the RACGP Rural
Generalist Fellowship (FRACGP-RG).
You’ll train across hospital, community general practice and in some instances, community non-general
practice settings.
The duration and structure of training depends on your Fellowship pathway choice, interests and previous
experience.
You can:
9 apply for up to 12 months of recognition of prior learning and experience for hospital training time
pending your experience
9 undertake your training terms in an order that suits you once your first hospital year requirement
has been met. A few exceptions apply*
*Extended skills in community-based general practice or community-based non-general practice settings are required to be
completed after community-based general practice training has been completed. Core emergency training can be undertaken
at any stage after the first hospital year except for doctors pursuing emergency medicine as their chosen discipline. In this
instance, core emergency medicine must be completed prior to the Additional Rural Skills Training term.
3
Australian General Practice Training Program
Program guide
Fellowship examinations
During your training you’ll sit Fellowship exams. To be eligible to sit, you’ll need to have met your training
and education requirements and have completed a minimum of two years of training, including your second
general practice training term.
– Clinical Competency Exam (practical) – can only be completed following successful completion of the
AKT and KFP.
Fees apply. For more information, see the AGPT Registrar Training Handbook.
Part-time training
You’re welcome to undertake your training part-time. You’ll need to work at least 14.5 hours per week, over at
least two days. For full details about part-time training requirements see the AGPT Registrar Handbook.
Leave
You can access several types of leave on the AGPT Program. This includes sick leave, carers leave and
annual leave, as well as up to 26 weeks leave for other reasons. This is explained further in the AGPT
Registrar Handbook.
4
Australian General Practice Training Program
Program guide
· These requirements don’t have to be met before you apply or commence training. They can be met
during your hospital training year.
· If you’ve already met some or all of these requirements, you might be able to reduce your training
time and apply for recognition of prior learning and experience.
Hospital experience
To enter a community-based general practice term, you’ll need to have satisfactorily completed:
· a minimum of 104 weeks of hospital work in an accredited Australian or New Zealand hospital of which
52 weeks must be worked at a PGY2 or higher level (generally post-general registration), with evidence of
education, assessment and feedback.
· This experience needs to have been within ten years of starting your first general practice term.
· Where clinical terms are more than 5 years old or lack the range and/or depth of experience as
expected in the AMC PGY2 certification, further clinical experience may be necessary prior to starting
your first community general practice term
· The Australian Medical Council (AMC) postgraduate year 2 (PGY2) certificate (including any combination
of experiences that meets the AMC requirements) is sufficient to demonstrate the hospital experience
has been met.
· You’ll need general registration and a further 12 months of accredited supervised clinical hospital
rotations (including any hospital allocated general practice rotations) at PGY2 and above, with evidence
of education, assessment and feedback with satisfactory performance. This experience will also need to
meet recency requirements.
5

· a paediatric term/s (classified as including acute and critical illness care and undifferentiated care)
· completion of the Sydney Child Health Program, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Child Health
at the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network, in addition to experience in paediatric, mixed emergency and/
or general practice rotation/s.
· Further details about how you can meet the paediatric competency, including evidence required,
is available in the AGPT Hospital & Paediatric Competency Requirements document.
6
Australian General Practice Training Program
Program guide
· The maximum amount of RPLE available is 52 calendar weeks (1 year) and can be applied to hospital
experience. RPLE is not available for community based general practice terms.
· To be eligible to apply, you’ll need to have completed at least 104 weeks (2 years) full-time equivalent of
hospital-based work in Australia or New Zealand by the commencement of training, at least 52 weeks of
which was worked at a level above intern level (usually post-general registration) within the last ten years.
If your experience was between 5–10 years ago, you may be asked to provide additional evidence of how
you have maintained your skills during that time.
· When assessing applications for RPLE, we’ll consider whether your hospital training and experience was
relevant to general practice, showed variety and breadth across components of the RACGP Curriculum
and syllabus, and was completed successfully. We won’t count more than 26 weeks in a 52-week period if
it has been spent in one discipline, with the exception of emergency medicine.
We recommend you keep your BLS certification current throughout your training as you’ll need to complete
BLS training in the 12 months prior to applying for Fellowship.
7
Australian General Practice Training Program
Program guide
You’re required to complete three general practice training terms (18 months FTE) as part of your core
vocational training requirements. To help ensure you have exposure to a diverse range of patient populations
and presentations, most GP registrars will be expected to have at least two different supervisors and work
under two different business models.
The placement process is designed to enable flexibility and choice for both you and practices. It takes into
consideration your preferences, personal circumstances, training needs and program commitments, as well as
the primary healthcare needs of communities. Where you train will also depend on your training pathway and
region, explained in further detail later in this guide.
The application and selection process for entry into the AGPT Program is separate to the process for
securing general practice placements. Your performance in the AGPT selection process is not shared
with training facilities.
8
Australian General Practice Training Program
Program guide
The breadth of extended skills options is extensive and could include for example, Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander health, palliative care, sports medicine, sexual health, skin cancer medicine or one of many
other special interest areas. You can also undertake an approved academic post in this term.
If you’re working towards the Rural Generalist Fellowship, you can complete the core emergency medicine
component of your training as your extended skills training or consolidate your advanced skill.
You’ll receive a list of available extended skills posts after you join the training program and can discuss with
your medical educator which would be most beneficial for your learning and training journey.
· Extended skills training in a hospital setting can be undertaken at any stage of training.
· In non-general practice settings (eg sexual health clinic), depending on the post, you’ll be granted approval
after successfully completing at least your first general practice training term. In some instances, you’ll
need to first complete at least two or three general practice training terms.
· In general practice settings, an extended skills training post can only be undertaken once you’ve
successfully completed all three general practice training terms.

Australian General Practice Training Program
Program guide
If you choose to train towards rural generalism on the AGPT Program, you’ll train concurrently towards
achieving RACGP Fellowship (FRACGP) and RACGP Rural Generalist Fellowship (FRACGP-RG).
Your training will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need as a rural generalist, at the same time,
give you the flexibility to adapt your training if your plans change.
You may be able to reduce your training time by up to 12 months if you have previous hospital-based
experience.
In addition to sitting RACGP Fellowship exams, you’ll need to sit assessments for your additional rural skills
training (ARST). These will vary in format and cost depending on your chosen discipline/s.
· train part-time
· apply for region and pathway priority preferencing on entry into the program
· opt out of rural generalist training anytime if your training plans change.

Training opportunities
The AGPT Program offers a unique opportunity to develop your capabilities, expand your
scope of practice and explore existing or new interests in a supervised and supported setting.
Generally, you will undertake this training in an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service
(ACCHS).These are primary healthcare services initiated and operated by the local Aboriginal
community to deliver culturally and clinically appropriate comprehensive healthcare to the local
community. The RACGP has more than 175 accredited Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health
training sites across Australia.
In recognition that the medical profession has a key role to play in improving the quality of health
services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, during your training you will undertake
cultural awareness education and cultural safety training.
· gaining a better understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health that can then be applied
in an ACCHS or a mainstream general practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients
· understanding the disparities in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal health status, and why it is
important to close the gap.

Academic posts
An academic post is a training term where you learn research and medical education skills in a placement with a
university department.
There are 20 academic posts available every year. This includes three specialised posts, the AIDA Post
offered to an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander general practice registrar, the AJGP Post, which incorporates
a standard academic post with additional editing work and the PhD Post for registrars completing a PhD
alongside training.
An academic post is a 12-month (0.5 FTE) training term undertaken within a Department of General Practice,
or equivalent, at a university. Concurrent to an academic post you also undertake a clinical placement as
part of your training on the AGPT Program.
In addition to building your skills in academia and research, in an academic post you participate in teaching
activities, enjoy RACGP-funded registration, flights and accommodation to selected national conferences,
network with other GPs in training and GP researchers/academic GPs, access professional development and
research funding and benefit from enhanced job opportunities.
For more information, visit the AGPT Academic Post Program webpage.

Training locations
From Broome to Brisbane, with the RACGP you can train almost anywhere in Australia.
In your AGPT Program application, you’ll be asked to nominate up to six pathway/training location
preferences. The number of training places vary by pathway and region.
Pathways
There are two training pathways on the RACGP AGPT Program – general or rural pathway. Your training is
the same on each pathway – the only difference is where you undertake your training. It’s important to note
that not all regions and subregions offer general and rural pathway positions.
You can choose to pursue the Rural Generalist Fellowship on any pathway.

Transfers
The ability to transfer between training regions or pathways depends on your pathway and location transfer
reason/s.
· General pathway registrars can undertake a rural rotation within or outside their allocated training region
at any time.
· Current ACRRM registrars can request a transfer from ACRRM to the RACGP.
· Other transfer requests require an application supported by evidence of extenuating and unforeseen
circumstances that justify a transfer. The RACGP will provide individual case management support to the
registrar who requests a transfer to optimise the outcome for the registrar, whether the request to transfer
is granted or denied.
For more information about transfers, see the AGPT Registrar Training Handbook.
