Newsgroups is a group that posts messages on an online bulletin board where anyone can read and

respond.

Chat rooms is a websites offering online chat facilities.

Instant messaging (IM) is a communication service over the internet that allows instant transmission
of text based messages from sender to receiver.

While chatting (DO’S)

Use a chat nickname

Check the terms conditions and privacy statements of the chat site before you chat.

Use decent language

(DON’T’S)

Don’t reveal any personal information.

Do not agree to meet someone you have talked to only in a chat room.

Newsgroup are similar to email except that messages are not posted to somebody’s mailbox.

Difference between chat rooms and newsgroups, newsgroup communication is not instant while
chat rooms are instant.

Blog is a website on which articles are posted regularly and displayed in reverse sequential order.

Blogging: authoring a blog, maintaining a blog, or adding an article to an existing blog.

Blog pots: individual articles on a blog

Web feeds or news feeds is a facility that informs if the website you are interested in has a new
content.

Feed readers is a program that allows you to keep up with new content from websites of your
interest.

Social networking is a website that provides a virtual community for people to keep in touch with
friends or share common interests. SixDegrees was the first social networking site. It exited from
1997 to 2001. Then came Friendster in 2002

Facebook is very popular social networking service. It was founded by Mark Zuckerberg who was a
student in Harvard university in 2004. Facebook lets you share some photos and videos as well you
can video call or call someone through it but using internet.

Myspace was started by Tom Anderson in July 2003. In between 2005 and 2008 it was the most
popular social networking site. It let you create a personal profile in which you can share it. As it has
a strong focus on music sharing with instant messaging and video playing features. It became bad
bcs of the adversting.

Twitter was created by Jack Dorsey in March 2006. It allows you to communicate by sending short
texts msgs up to 280 characters long to ur friends or followers. These msgs are called Tweets. Most
people use twitter to inform others about their latest happenings. It played a large social role by
helping orgainse protest.

Twitter amplify is used by companies to advertise their products.

E-greetings is a website used to send greetings msgs using email as it needs network.

Online gaming means to play any online games which needs network.

Massive multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) is a multiplayer game with a huge number
of players from around the world

Online telephony allows users to make telephone calls over internet. When you make a call your call
goes over the internet local telephone network and then to the telephone ur calling.

Skype is the most popular internet telephony software. Calls from skype to a telephone num is not
free.

File transport protocol (FTP) it is used to download or receive files. We use ftp:// instead of http://. It
works on client server model it let the user access information and services on the comp server.
Cloud computing is a technology that uses internet and central remote server to hold data and
applications.

Think free, google apps, google drive and ms office 365 are examples of it.

An online file sharing service provides a way to store and access information in the cloud rather than
on hard drive.

Onedrive used to be called windows live skydrive it’s a password protected storage area in the cloud
hosted by Microsoft corporation. It is used to store files and access them anytime ur online.

Google photos is a free photo management service developed by google it was released in 2015
after phasing picasa. It is used to edit videos and photos and adding filters and adding borders as
well as changing background color and song.

Youtube it allows people to discover watch and share self created videos. The founder of it were
Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Javed Karim when they were in a dinner party in san Francisco. Then
google purchased it for $1.65billion.
